HoMedics Restore Water Purification

Many of our friends have ditched bottled water and have moved over to pitcher filtration or reverse osmosis systems to get their fix of agua, filling up their oh-so-stylish SIGG or Kleen Kanteen bottles. And now Target-centric brand HoMedics has joined the clean water category with the Restore water purification system, which offers UV tech to zap your tap of any microbes....

The $99.99 HoMedics Restore system uses ultraviolet (UV) C spectrum light which is reputed to kill most bacteria, microbial cysts and viruses that might be floating in your cup, while a cartridge filtration system ($7.99 each) much like those from the likes of PUR remove "heavy metals, chlorine (taste & order) and some industrial & agricultural pollutants are reduced. " We like the design of the pitcher itself, with a sort of lightbulb in the pitcher look that makes the clarity of the water more evident. Is it any better than the competition? We can't say yet...but we'll see if we can hunt down a review unit in the future to report back.

Wow! I'm going to get that. I drink bottled because I like the idea that it comes from a spring or a glacier somewhere, but this is appeals to the gadget lover, planet lover, water lover, and style lover in me.

While i appreciate that tap water is bad in some parts of the country (get an installed water purifier), i still don't get why we need to plug the damn water filter in. are you really THAT afraid of microbes (that are all over everything including yourself)? wash your hands and don't eat off the floor, i'm pretty sure you're going to be fine with a brita filter (i drink straight out of the tap in nyc).

btw. a lot of bottled waters come from the municipal water system and are just filtered.

It comes from an oil well. By drinking bottled water, you are wasting 2000 times more energy than it takes to drink the same amount of tap water. Just producing the bottles wastes 50 million barrels of oil a year. Then there's the energy to process the water, label the bottles, fill the bottles, seal the bottles, transport the bottles, refridgerate your water...

And all because you like the idea that it comes from a glacier. I hope you like the idea that there won't *be* any glaciers left soon, because people who aren't willing to make even small sacrifices who are destroying the planet.

But yeah, what is the appeal of glacial or spring water anyway? Is it really that much tastier? Most people can't tell the difference compared to tap on blind taste tests.

I only keep bottle water around for disaster preparedness.
