Smokeless Ashtray: Looks Like a UFO and a Hair Dryer

081308_tf_ashtray.jpgWe saw a recent post on ATLA about welcoming smoking guests into your non-smoking house. While some of you thought you should ban the offending chimneys completely, others of you seemed willing to work with smoking visitors. Maybe this gadget will help: The Ionic Smokeless Ashtray.

Neo-Tec’s Ionic Smokeless Ashtray claims to be the world’s first ashtray that actually purifies cigarette smoke as it leaves the cigarette. When the eco-friendly device, made from ABS plastic, is switched on, it breaks down smoke and other particles into negatively charged ions using an ionizer. These particles are then captured in the positively charged dome.

It not only rids your environment of cigarette odors, but also of airborne dust, bacteria and many other harmful pollutants. It is 100% silent and runs on either 4 AA batteries or an AC adapter (included). It'll run you about $20, a tiny price to pay for an odor-less couch, the company of all your friends and some peace of mind.

That doesn't seem to make much sense - it would only filter when the cigarette is resting in the tray, which seems to be a very small minority of the time the cigarette is lit and fuming.

I have to agree with melanie. I am a smoker. My husband is not. Before I finally caved and stopped smoking inside the apartment (I go downstairs to smoke now), we tried every smoke-eating gadget under the sun. The problem with a smokeless ashtray is that it's only effective if the cigarette stays resting directly under/on it. That means every drag you take and every exhale still blows smoke into the room. While an ionizer can certainly help with that issue, it doesn't help much - kinda like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound. That little thing and 4 AA batteries are not going to do a damn thing in the average sized room (even our tiny NYC rooms!).

If you insist on continuing to smoke (and I do, go figure), just do everyone a favor and take it outside. And don't forget to wash your hands and brush your teeth or use a mint when you come back in!
