Bosch Tassimo: The Multipurpose Coffee Maker

090909_rg_boschtassimo_01.jpgWhen is a coffee maker more than a simple coffee machine? You can spend hundreds of dollars on the perfect coffee machine, espresso machines and whatnot, but if you are trying to find something simple that looks really good, you'll have to look no further than the Bosch Tassimo.

090909_rg_boschtassimo_02.jpgThis is Bosch's new coffee maker and it's called the Tassimo. What's different from other models is that this is a versatile machine. It's stylish and modern and can make 6 different types of drinks, from fresh brewed coffee, espresso, cappuccino, latte macchiato, hot chocolate, and teas. The heat-up period is very short and it uses self-contained and disposable T-discs. Now we usually don't approve of creating extra waste, but the added benefit of having these discs is that each of them contains extra brewing information that the coffee machine can read. It then tweaks the settings accordingly. It will modify brewing time, temperature and drink strength.

This can be definitely interesting for places where a lot of different people want to brew their drinks. We've used these types of coffee makers before and we have to say that they work well. However, since they do create more waste, it's kind of concerning. It's good to mention that the T-disc is a standard size that works well with a bunch of different Tassimo models from different manufacturers. This allows the Bosch coffee machine to be a lot smaller. The Bosch Tassimo is available for $170,

A friend and I house-sat for a couple with one of these last winter and I fell in love with it. The coffee it makes isn't mindblowing, but it's better than my slapdash, hit and miss approach to making coffee. Neither my husband or I are big coffee/tea drinkers, so a one-cup-at-a-time system sounds ideal, but I worry about the economy/practicality of the system compared to a regular coffee maker. Has anyone switched to a Tassimo from a regular coffee maker, and is the cost worth the convenience?

An office I worked in switched to a Tassimo-like machine. The only reason they would switch is because it's cheaper to maintain in the long run. Remember, you don't really have to clean the filters as regularly.

Bottom line is that this machine saves a lot of space and if you don't drink that much coffee, this could be perfect. However, if you are a coffee connaisseur, well then this isn't the machine for you.

Finally, I do have to admit that the coffee maker looks very nice. It's got a one-button control mechanism which is quite nice and the fact that it can read the info on the T-Discs to tweak brewing is kind of neat.

The Tassimo machines work excellent as advertised, in regards to their mechanics, and if for an office environment, a good option for the convenience.

There is an issue of taste for those who are particular about their coffee, but the results are on par to a typical Starbuck's cuppa. My main issue with these machines are the non-option of a reusable T-Discs, which lead to a waste where an easily recyclable, compost friendly paper filter brewed pot puts out a superior brew (especially whole bean ground).
