We have been looking at digital picture frames for a while now, but for some reason can't find the motivation to go buy one. Why? It is easier to display different photos with a digital frame compared to a traditional frame. The prices have come down considerably over the last few years. The available sizes have increased to a point where they are big enough to display on a wall or mantle. Even with these reasons, the New York Times David Pogue has a nice article explaining why we have yet to buy one.

surprisingly, as technologically oriented as i am... i received one of these for christmas from a close friend, and i have yet to even take it out of the box, except for the initial inspection. i'd have to plug it in every time i get home, and unplug it when i leave... and i've got way to many other good solutions for displaying my pictures that don't require excess power use. i think i may use it on my desk at work... at least i'd get to actually see it there.

I don't own a digital frame myself but that's due to lack of space right now. However, I have bought them as gifts for others but I don't just give them the frame. I find photos they would like and put them on the frame for them. So when my friend opens her gift and is over joyed with having a digital frame she can plug it in and instantly enjoy it!
I tend to like frames with a dark border because the light ones (white, silver) seem to lighten the color of the photo. A remote control is a MUST as well as slots for various cards. I also buy them a memory card which adds a gig or 2 of space for them to load on even more photos.
Yes, doing all of this takes more time but every digital frame I've given is always well received and appreciated and they always find a spot in their home to put it.
As for brand I like smartparts. Don't get a Kodak one, I find the quality of the photos displayed are not very good.

Aren't we supposed to be thinking about more ways to save electricity rather that use it? These frames seem like they will eventually go the way of the 8 track cassette players and mood rings.

We have given digital picture frames to each older member of the family who either has no internet connection or has no desire to figure out anything more complicated than reading email, including looking at attached photos, or can't be bothered to figure out how to follow a link to an online photography site. We have quite a few of those in the family, still. We use the Ceiva, which attaches to the phone line, updates in the middle of the night; each member of the family has a log-in and can add pictures to the frame at her convenience.
They have been so well-received, my sister has gotten one of her own, just to have a non-extra-step required way of displaying her digital photos.
