Plugging In: A New Lease on Life - How Light Affects Paint

2008-02-06lightvspaint.jpg
When we were painting our apartment, the green of the kitchen/dining area looked like Shrek coming out of the can, and Kermit the Frog on the roller. When it dried, of course, it was a much richer color that we really like. What amazed us was the obvious difference lighting made on the color. The pictures above were taken seconds apart, same camera settings--and these rooms are open to each other, not just through a doorway, but there is no wall between them.

Vers 2x Wood iPod/MP3 Speaker Dock

2008-02-12vers.jpg
Wow.

That's all we can manage to get out of our speechless mouths when we read about the Vers 2x Speaker Dock. Real cherry wood from sustainably-managed plantations; 20 watts of power out of each 3.5" speaker; sound processing that makes the sound more like the original, as it was intended; class D amplifier (more efficiency from the same amount of electricity used to power a class B amplifier, which is in most items like this one)...

How To...Create a Mobile Office

2008-02-12changingtable.jpg

We saw this idea over on DIY Ideas and thought about how the changing table could also serve as a portable office--wireless networking and printing, a place to stash supplies and files, and the ability to roll it away when you don't need it.

A rolling cart could be picked up pretty easily second hand, and with a fresh coat of paint and some supplies, it's ready to mobilize.

Two Desks Built for Two

2008-02-11deskfortwo.jpg

Last week, John asked for help with coming up with a solution to get two computer desks in his small apartment when his girlfriend moves in. We've seen two ideas since then, and wanted to share the resources with you as well, so we're highlighting them here. Above is the desk/bookshelf built for two we saw first over on AT:LA, and we have the DIY instructions after the jump. The other option is great for small spaces--especially narrow ones--and only $130 at Ikea.

Clean MacBook Stains with Toothpaste

2008-02-08cleaned_macbook.jpg

Polish your MacBook like you wax your car: apply white stuff, clean off with a barely wet towel, stand back and admire the shine. Unlike waxing your car, it isn't wax you apply to clean a MacBook, but rather toothpaste--the white paste kind.

Five Reasons to Not Buy a Blu-ray DVD Player...Yet

2008-02-07pioneerbluray.jpg

With Warner Bros. going exclusively Blu-ray for their high definition DVDs, along with all the other recent wins in Blu-ray's corner, it seems that it's about finally time to go out and buy a Blu-ray player. However, John Falcone from Crave has 5 reasons you shouldn't buy a Blu-ray DVD player, yet:

Look! Tiny Samsung MP3 Player

2008-02-06samsung1.jpg

We spied this MP3 player on our bus ride into work and were taken by the bright screen, compact size, and frankly, a non-iPod look--or at least much less so than most. Turns out Michael's looking to upgrade to something with more memory--this one is 2 years old, and only has 512 MB on it--and considering an iPod.

A look into what Samsung's producing these days yields...
