Best Product: Amazon's Music Store

2008-3-27amazonmp31.jpgThis isn't a product, per se, but Amazon's MP3 Store has opened our home up to a new world of music consumption. We love the DRM-free files that allow you to share your music with anyone or any computer that you wish, but we've also found other aspects of the service that satisfy our music needs without any of the hassle.

When we read today that it had climbed to the status of the second most popular online music store, we weren't surprised. And, frankly, we wouldn't be surprised if it toppled iTunes' music empire, if they can get the industry behind them.

2008-3-27amazonmp32.jpgWe love that songs are often cheaper than iTunes, at $.89 per track, and the web interface suits our daily surfing habits, as there's no need to go to a separate program to get our tracks. The DRM-free files mean that we can share our music without any problems or having to give authorizations on every computer in the house. In the old days, if myself or my boyfriend bought a CD, of course we would share it between us, but not so much with iTunes tracks. With Amazon, we no longer have the conversation "go get your iPod, it has that song on it." We simply share and share alike.

While iTunes offers seamless file integration, we like being able to store our files the way that we want. Sure, it's an extra (but easy) step to getting our files imported into iTunes, but we know where the original file is when we need it.

Who do you use for your digital music provider, Amazonmp3 or iTunes? What do you love or hate about them?

I use Emusic and Magnatune! They don't have tons of big names (although Conjour One and Metisse might ring bells and are both on Emusic) but the music is cheap, good and has always been MP3s. Oh yeah, and Magnatune works directly with artists so they get half of what you choose to pay and the other half goes to the site.

I like the Amazon music store, and their prices are excellent. I am also an emusic subscriber--and that service can't be beat. I recommend the post by David Pakman, President and CEO of eMusic on the emusic blog, 17 dots.

To quote a paragraph:
While Amazon isn’t willing to make sales data available, we are more than happy to: eMusic sells more than 7,000,000 songs a month. Seven million tracks of independent music covering everything from Cat Power to Miles Davis. Since Amazon opened its MP3 store on September 25, 2007, eMusic has sold 40,000,000 tracks. Since November of 2003, we have sold almost 200,000,000 songs. These are huge numbers, and firmly back our claims to be the #1 site for independent music and the #2 digital music service after iTunes. Those declarations have not previously been disputed.
