Apartments Pre-Fitted with Solar Panels?

092409_tf_apartmentpanels.jpgWhen scoping out potential apartments, we expect to see some standard appliances in most every unit: Refrigerator, Oven and a Dishwasher, if we're lucky. But the best apartments—the ones that get our rent money—have extras like built-in microwaves ...and solar panels. Wait, what?

Only in Japan, people!

Tokyo-based home-builders Sekisui House are planning to sell apartment buildings that are pre-fitted with solar cells on the roof, meaning that residents will be able to not only self-power their homes, but even allow them to sell their surplus power.

In case of emergency (or a week of rainy days), the buildings still have service from conventional utility companies.

Is this the wave of the future in the renters market? Would you be excited to rent from a solar building? Let us know in the comments!

Hmmm. Wasn't that the goal of "The Solaire" ( http://www.thesolaire.com/index.html ) ? My understanding is that it's been around for almost a decade now...
