Blogging the NY Times:Network Access Storage

2007_08_03 NAS.jpg We have already felt the pain of running out of disk space on our laptop. 60 gigabytes has moved to 100 gigabytes and we are certain that will soon be too small. The NY Times shares some advice about network accessed storage to help with the situation. Basically, network accessed storage is a large capacity hard drive that can be accessed by all the computers on the same network. If you have a wireless router and wireless computers you have all you need to get started.

There are many options available when it comes to this so your really need to think about how you are going to use it. File backup? File transfer between machines or even a central repository to store and stream music from? Every manufacturer does things a little bit diffferently. Be aware that if the Hollywood Mafia gets their way, it will soon be illegal to transfer media files that you paid for across your own home network. So backup devices may be illegal in the future.

If ever there was a good reason to say "write you elected officials", this would be an excellent time to say that.

Isn't it called "Network-attached storage"? ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network-attached_storage )

I am using a Linksys NSLU2 an external USB HDD. It is a Linux-based device, which means you can flash the firmeware and have it do some more useful things you want. Other than the obvious file server functionality, it, for example, can be a web server and can serve music to iTunes-compatible devices in the house using Firefly Media Server.
