Blogging Wired: Can Opener Review

2007_03_16 wired can opener.jpg
The can opener is one of most important kitchen utensils. Why is it then that looking into many peoples utensil drawer would reveal a rusty can opener requiring the grip strenth of an olympic wrestler to use? Fortunately, Wired has reviewed 4 electric models that take the hand cranking out of opening your pork and beans.

After consideration of cleanliness, cutting speed and balance, the can openers were ranked in the following order:

• Sharper Image No-Hands Deluxe Auto Can Opener $25
• Hamilton Beach Compact Can Opener $20
• Cuisinart Deluxe Stainless Steel Can Opener $50
• Black & Decker Ergo Cordless Can Opener $28

For $25, maybe now is the time to upgrade.

I still like non-electric ones. Less clutter on countertop

Thanks for posting this review! It's exactly what I was searching for, as I've been looking to buy an electric can opener for my 86 yo Mom. She has limited use of her left hand, therefore she is unable to use a manual opener. I'm definitely getting her the Sharper Image one, since they ranked it as no 1.

To Francesca,
I found your comment to be of little help. Sheesh! there are some people (ie, the elderly, the disabled, etc) who have more to worry about than "clutter on the countertop". ?? Electric can openers may not be a chic kitchen accessory, BUT for some, they are very essential items.
