Do You Need Tech to Get You Through a Workout?

062209workout000.jpgPicture this: I've left my humble digs and driven 7 and a half minutes to my local gym. Just as I pull into the parking spot, I realize that although I've got my workout clothes, a towel and a bottle of water, I left my iPod Nano at home. Now, to me, working out is just not bearable without my earbuds in. So did I drive an extra 15 minutes (round trip) to grab my little workout buddy back at home?

Yes, yes I did.

Spare me the lectures about the energy I wasted. When I'm about to spend an hour or more running towards a never-approaching wall, I need to have the Pussycat Dolls alongside me.

I have friends who would do the same last-minute turn-around to grab their cell phone because they need to catch every text message and not miss a thing while they're busy pumping iron.

Do you guys work out with tech, like your iPod or cell phone? How necessary are your gadgets to your workout? Let us know in the comments!

when i run i can't do it without my ipod shuffle.
when i bike, it's not really safe to listen to music, so i don't.
when i lift, depends on how long and which gym i'm going to (24 fitness plays music).

overall i'd say music really helps me stay focused and workout harder. but if i forgot my shuffle would i turn around and get it? no.

Need? Nah. but v. cool to have it. I love RunKeeper Free for GPSing my runs.

New "geek"/tech workout goodies are the computer hookups for my new Concept2 rower. Not just USB attachments for the PC, but also third party software permitting rowing against folks on the internet, against, your former selves, etc. all in a neat video game format!!

I always have to have my iPod when I run, be it at the gym or outside. When I'm outside I use my iPod Nike running thingy. If I forget my iPod I use my iPhone and just use an elliptical trainer instead of the treadmill. I also use my iPod for weights and when its time for my ab workout I have a 16 minute workout recorded on it. The only place I usually don't wear it is at the climbing gym, just cause they play good music there & the scene is more social.

I usually have my iPhony with me, but I don't listen to it. I like listening to music while making myself huge but I don't want to turn up the volume to overcome the obligatory gym techno beats. That would just hurt. I hear a lot of people's "too loud" music in the gym and cringe at what is happening to their hearing.

I can't stand the music they play at my gym so headphones are a must.

Never. I find it to be a distraction. Sounds a bit odd, but it's true. I'm an outdoorsy worker-outer and to have music pumping just seems to disconnect me from what's going on around me. Besides, the cords and devices would always get in my way (plus, buds don't stay put in my ears very well and in-ears aren't too comfortable so I'm a speaker or can user).

Or maybe I'm just masochistic about running...

I absolutely need music to work out. I've only forgot my headphones/ipod once (and never again!) and suffered through the workout. It's really hard for me to stay focused and keep my pace & energy up when I can hear my brain telling me how difficult it all is. I really only need the music to drown out my brain. :)

I have left the gym and just given up because my batteries were dead on my mp3 player. I know I won't get anywhere without music.

On the treadmill, I definitely need music to cover up the whir and squeak of the machines. If I'm running outside, I don't always need music, but I track my runs with the Nike thing, so my iPod (plus chapstick, headband, and water bottle...all high tech in their own way) sit right next to the door in case I'm tempted to forget something.

Congrats to you on heading BACK to the gym again!

I always listen to music when I work out, either when I run or bike. Since I bike on the bike paths, it's usually pretty safe, though I have been known for using my iPod on my scooter as well.

I use an iPod Classic 160 GB and I wonder if they will finally come up with bigger sizes soon. Probably not.

As for music, I listen to DJ sets from Tiƫsto or Preach. They last for over an hour and are pretty full of energy, which is great for workouts.
