Are $7250 Cables Really Better?

2007_10_03 AnjouSC.jpg

We are firm believers that a cable is a cable and you seem to agree. As long as it is purchased from a reputable dealer we are pretty sure that we would not be able to tell the difference in picture or audio quality. So when we see things like these 12 foot long $7250 speaker cables we think to ourselves, surely someone is trying to pull a fast one.

A man by the name of James Randi isn't buying it either and has offered up a millipn dollars to anyone that can prove these cables are better than ordinary Monster Cable. Something tells us that this will never happen, not that we would run out and drop more money on cables even if it did turn out to be true.

Um, yeah... they're still copper cable. Not worth $7250, obviously.

There's also the belief that Monster cable itself is overrated. There was a recent story in Fortune (CNN's Money) that said don't bother with those either.

Use lamp cord. All conductors are, for purposes of speaker wire, created equal (according to their gauge).

For interconnect cables, I am willing to pay a modest premium to get decent gauge cable, but for speakers? Forget it.
