Belkin's Concealed Surge Protector offers a hiding place for your cables. The covered box is safe and attractive. You don't have to worry about little fingers or animals gnawing, and it allows you to attack the cord octopus at it's source.

While, it doesn't completely solve the problem (you still have to get those cords to behave and get to their devices in an orderly fashion), it does seem to help you get on the right path. One of the most frustrating things about power strips, is how it complicates gathering the cords into one bundle to snake along the wall. This box helps direct the traffic, and hide some of the cord at the same time.
