Powermat: Wireless Charging is Bleepin' Here

101209_powermat.jpgSay goodbye to charging cord forests. If those recently released viral commercials haven't grabbed your attention yet, you too might find yourself exchanging some surprising f-bombs when you've taken a look at Powermat's newest line of wireless charging products. Whether it be iPods, iPhones, gaming handhelds, GPS devices, or even laptops (a future product planned), the Powermat will charge 'em, all through a single plug in the wall.

101209_powermat2.jpgSort of like Sony's take on wireless charging, but probably much more efficient since it doesn't require much distance between the product and the charging station. Well, rather it's required the portable device be placed on the mat in order for it to charge using its patented magnetic induction-based technology.

The Powermat also comes in two different flavors, at least for the time being, a Home and Office and a Portable Fold-Up edition. Both are available now in the US, Canada, and UK for $99.

i can't wait for this technology, but as it exists currently for most products, i'll wait. i have to desire to put a case on my device to allow it to charge wirelessly. the palm pre has the right idea with it's add-on.
either way, it'll be bad ass when all manufacturers get on board and you can charge anything wirelessly like this.

I'm not too enthused. The power transfer is very inefficient, and what's the point? You're still tethered too a charger, and in this case you can't even pick your item up and use it as you could with a cord attached.

Their website states that it should be charging at the same rate as if it were plugged in, though there are no efficiency statistics anywhere to be found..
