By Next Year 1 in 5 Households Will be Wireless Only

2008_08_18-old-phone.jpgDo you believe this statement? We do. Based on what you all have said before when asked what phone is your "home" phone and whether or not to keep the landline it doesn't seem too far off. Coming out of a recent report from the Neilsen company, by the end of the year 1 in 5 households will be cell phone only. Why?

The main reason is to save some cash. Why pay for two things, when you are really only using one. In our opinion, a stronger reason is that you have all your important contacts and information stored in your cell phone which makes it easier to get in touch with the people you need to. Have you ever taken the time to program all of your most important contacts into a landline cordless phone? Have you ever used your cell phone to find a number and then called that number using a landline? Sent a text message via your home phone?

Exactly.

Vtech has tried to blur the line between home phone and cell phone but the tide is changing. We wonder how long before this number doubles....

We keep a landline connection for emergencies. It's really cheap (no long distance, and we don't make calls out) and it gives me peace of mind that it's there in case our cell connection goes down. I also use it as the phone number when filling out non-important forms. An answering machine takes care of unwanted calls (I check it every few days). We keep a standard corded phone just in case the power goes out.

Cities are doing a good job of trying to get their reverse 911 database to include (or allow registry of) cell phone numbers, but I also know that emergencies that have everyone on their cell phones at once jams up the lines. So, our landline just makes me feel better.

I completely agree with having a land line in case of emergencies. Also, I like to have more than one handset. I don't carry my cell phone around with me and if it ring in a different part of my home, its pretty inconvenient. There isn't a good solution that lets you dock the cell phone and link it to extra handsets.

I only have a land line because cellular service is unusually poor where I live. On a really good day, I'll have two bars, and most of the time I have only one. Several times a week the service goes out entirely.

For two years I only needed a cell phone, and that worked out just fine until after I moved.

My parents have a landline, a VoIP line, and cell phones. After Hurricane Ike struck Houston, the landline was the only one that I could reach them on. After this experience, I'll always keep a landline active in case of emergency. The landline is like $13/month for basic service, with no long distance, but free incoming calls.
