How To...Turn Your iPod Touch Into a Free Phone

120508truphone000.jpgOk, so we've been a bit obsessed with our iPod Touch of late. It's like there isn't anything it can't do. Hello, it can even get us to the gym! Well, now we've found one more thing it can do. Using it's WiFi you can now make phone calls.

With the free TruPhone software and a microphone headset, you can turn your iPod Touch into a VoIP phone that can connect to an other Truphone users...

Truphone also turns iPhones, Blackberrys and Nokia's into free VoIP phones.

120508_sz_truphone.jpg Next up is letting the Touch make and receive calls to and from landlines at low cost and with Skype users for free. Seriously, is there anything the Touch can't do? Can it do my laundry? via Techradar

NOTE: Truphone is only compatible with 2nd Generation Touch units. Our 1st gen Touch rejected the app like a Blu-ray disc in a 1999 DVD player.

Definitely needs to be able to call non TruPhone/Skype users for free to make this worthwhile IMO.
That said, I'll either be getting the touch or iphone after macworld. Woot!!!

Welcome to 2006....*rolls eyes*
Windows Mobile phones have been doing the same things as iPhones (and more) for years.

Yeah, jamikb, that's great if we were talking about phones here, but we're talking about turning an iPod Touch MP3 player into a VOIP phone here, not the iPhone. But, nice try.

Jamilkb is mostly right....

PocketPC's have been able to do this since 2003. Even the later rev's of the Palm devices could. Bummer the UX was such a pain; and without capacitive touch support (and finger friendly UI) they never really took off.

That's just proof that Apple took a solid idea, figured out what was wrong with it...and nailed it. Brilliant incremental innovation that comes off as blue ocean thinking.
