Talkster: Free Calling Worldwide

2007-11-01talksterfree.jpg

Free calls from your phone. Skype better take notice of Talkster. The service, which allows you to make or receive free calls from anywhere in the world, is set to steal a little of Skype's thunder. That is, if you can figure out how to use it.

The instructions are a bit complicated, in fact we had to try it out for ourselves in order to explain it here. First you need to get to the talkster webpage, either via your computer, phone's wifi, or alternatively, you can send a sms. Fill in your name and phone number, as well as the contact information of who you want to call (up to five people at once.) Then you call the local number it provides, it connects you to your friend for 10 seconds so that you can explain that they need to call, and places you on hold while they call their local number. After you are connected, you both have to listen to an ad, and then you're dumped into your phone call without any warning.

All in all, it's pretty cool and we think we may use it to call some friends overseas. Once you've tried it out the first time and gotten the hang of it, we think you'll use it too.

Check out Rebtel (http://www.rebtel.com) instead. Offers the same hang up-call back service without the 10 seconds commercial in 39 countries. You'll get 10 minutes without the hang up-call back routine and 5 more for each friend you sign up. On facebook as well http://apps.facebook.com/myrebtel

With Rebtel you can also skip the hang up-call back stuff. Calling e.g. US cost 1.8 cents a minute ( the cost of the local call), UK cost 1.9 cents a minute ( the cost of the local call) or India cost 5.6 cents a minute ( the cost of the local call). That’s cheap! You’ll get an extra 10 minutes for swiping your card.

The good thing is that you can call from your mobile and I think the quality is great.

You should try jajah.com. It's free and it allows Free Global Calling (landline and/or mobile phone) between members. Super easy to use too. At the jajah home page, you type in your phone number, type in your friend's phone number, click call. Your phone will ring. Pick it up and start talking!
