Sony Vaio LT HD

Now this is a living room PC. The Sony Vaio LT HD is a 22 inch wall mountable display that contains a Blu-ray drive, 802.11n WiFi, and is CableCARD ready. The included wireless accessories further reduce clutter and would make this the ultimate kitchen PC.

The nice thing about this unit is how the TV and PC functionality has been separated in such a way that you can quickly turn the TV on and off while the PC continues to run in the background. No waiting for the PC to boot in order to watch TV makes this a pretty seamless TV/ PC combo.

Not available just yet, the HD model will be listed at $2900 with the standard model considerably less at $1900. Look for these in Sony Stores come October.

I have a love/hate relationship with Sony. On one hand, they compete with Apple for having some of the most beautiful and innovative computer hardware on the planet. They take chances on hardware that Apple wouldn't dare to, like the Clie line of PDAs, the U and UX series of micro PCs and the TR series of ultralight laptops. All were groundbreaking products.

Sony has three big problems: First their software sucks. They do manage to pack a few useful and innovative utilities in, but for the most part they are slow, bulky crap. Then they load the computer up with as much trial shovelware as possible. Second, they have a 'not invented here' mentality. Everything must use proprietary drivers, only Memory Stick media and 4-pin FireWire ports. Third, the Sony tax. Sony believes you must pay at least a 25% premium on equipment because it's from Sony. Ultimately, this is the killer. Who in their right mind is going to pay for a $2000 kitchen PC?
