We've done blogs about accessorizing with old technology before. Using old video games, old cameras and old typewriters as part of your decor can add a little bit of geek chic flair to your home. Another way to geek out your style? Wear it. We found vintage typewriter key jewelry, the perfect gift for the tech girl in your life...
WhatsYourType.com has been making watches, bracelets, earrings, rings, cufflinks, and necklaces out of refurbished typewriters since 1997.
All of their jewelry is made without the use of glue or solder and only from authentic keys from manual typewriters that otherwise would be on their way to landfill due to age and damage.
The rest of the typewriter? It's donated to an artist who builds life-size human figures out of their parts and sells them in galleries nationwide.
We love the idea that you can use the letters to spell out a message, like your kid's name or some smart-ass ironic jab, and not have it look like a nameplate or message t-shirt. And all while being green and recycling landfill-bound vintage tech!
Holy crap are they ripping you off.
If you want typewriter jewelry and actually want to have the money going to the people that make it, go to etsy.com.
You can find any kind of it you want, and it's just regular people making some money.
I got my wife one at a indie craft fair (that i found out about through etsy) with an Ampersand on it (because i am a typography junkie) and a 7 because we got married on 7/7/07, and it was only $24, met the person who made it, and came with sterling chain.
