Detroit Graphic Designer Sells Everything She Owns for a Penny a Piece!
576 items up for grabs!

050509_sz_megan2.jpg What if you had to sell everything you owned? Would you go to Craigslist? eBay? Have a stoop sale? Megan Deal, of Detroit, is packing all her worldly belongings into a single bag on June 1st 2009 and heading to Greensboro, Alabama. She'll stay there for a year, where she'll be involved with the operation of M Lab, a permanent Design Lab built by the 2008 Project M crew. "Situated on the HERO campus, the Lab is equipped to house passionate young designers who are interested in using the space to work on meaningful projects in Hale County. A primary focus at the lab will be on creating systems, structures and programs that build capacity for the community. HERO (Hale Empowerment and Revitalization Organziation) supports sustainable housing development and positive change for over 400 families a year in impoverished Hale County."

"In preparation for total immersion into the Greensboro community, I am selling everything that I own."

Megan has photographed everything single thing she owns -- from vitamins to a decibel reader. Everything is priced at one penny. All profits will be used to help Megan with travel and living expenses for the next 14 months.

Her website, Goodbye Waffle Maker, gives a unique glimpse into someone's life. Just like sifting through a neighborhood yard sale gives clues into a person's life -- hello Thighmaster! -- so does a virtual yard sale.

Greensboro (Hale County) is an interesting place. Auburn University's Rural Studio program founded by the late Sambo Mockbee has done some real neat stuff down there. Though so may argue the moral dilemma of "playing god" to the poor folks who live in the area. Ultimately - I think they enjoy it and are happier for it.
