DIY: Pink Eraser USB Flash Drive Hiding Data In Plain Sight

101308_rg_pinkusberaser_01.jpgIt's a common thing to have a USB flash drive. Most people probably have more than one since the technology evolves so quickly. These little devices are extremely useful and handy. However, that doesn't stop them from being stolen. They can go missing at work, at school or at your office. We found this little DIY project really easy and fun, as well as useful. Also, it does look slick. Having a rubberized enclosure for a USB drive is something good.

101308_rg_pinkusberaser_03.jpgThis little DIY project is really easy and straightforward. If you mess up cutting out the eraser, you can always start over. By using an older USB flash drive, you cut down on the risks of breaking you drive. The total cost for this little build could be as low as $5, depending on how much you spent on the USB drive.

101308_rg_pinkusberaser_05.jpgThe first part involves cutting the erasers. Then you take apart the flash drive. It's usually pretty easy. You'll be amazed at how small the devices actually are, without their plastic enclosures. Hollow out the eraser by using a rotary tool like a Dremel.

Is there an issue with getting heat out with this?

Might not work in my office. Erasers are more likely to get swiped than a flash drive...

It's not evolution that makes them so common. It's the fact that they are cheap. Yes, technology had to evolve to make them cheap, but technological evolution isn't to blame here.

This is a GREAT idea! My only concern would be the heat venting, like others have mentioned... would hate to lose my data because it couldn't "breathe".

I've been using my Lego-style USB Flash Drive for months now and always get people commenting on how cute it is, so I'm sure they'd do a doubletake on an eraser one, too!
