Hot on the heals of the announcement of the death of HD-DVDs, Netflix has now announced that they are quickly phasing out their inventory in favor of Blu-Ray. The problem? They're finding it to not be as cost effective, which could mean higher rates for all of us.
News: Netflix Adding More Blu-Ray, May Raise Rates
Netflix's recent press release announced that they will be phasing out HD-DVDs by the year's end. And, a recent interview with their CFO, Barry McCarthy, uncovers that the current selection of 400 Blu-Ray movies will soon reach over 1,500.
McCarthy also revealed that this may mean a price hike for Netflix subscribers, stating that the switch to Blu-Ray is going to increase costs. As a subscriber who doesn't rent HD content, we hope that this is a price increase targeted at HD users, rather than making everyone suffer.

Doesn't surprise me, after all Netflix has dropped their rates in the past year to stay ahead of Blockbuster's service. But now that Blockbuster's pretty much defunct, the postal service increasing the cost of the mailers, and the Blu-ray ramp-up, Netflix is looking to cover their costs and lumping it all together as a single increase. Call it what you will.

I think that they ought to add on blu-ray as a subscription option that costs more, and make those high definition junkies pay for their habit.
