If you ever enjoy a massive California quake that takes down the power grid, along with all the AC powered phones, cellular nets, and local internet we take for granted, locating one of those old nasty payphones that runs on line current will make you very happy. It was the only way I could let my frantic family know I was alive and well in 1989.

I locked myself out of my apartment (keys and phone inside) and walked for about a mile before I could get to a 7-11 that had payphones - 75 cents a call - with special rates to Mexico. I'm really glad it was there.
