Final Frame: The Struktable

The Struktable concept makes us imagine utilizing larger multi-touch displays for home organization/layout uses in the home or via a retail site (IKEA, you need one of these in-store!), not to mention the myriads of gaming, creative and productivity suites on a 70" screen that trumps the Microsoft Surface (though we're more enamored with Microsoft's recent Microsoft vision of 2019 vid). The future and concepts like these have a funny way of actually coming to fruition given enough time...

The Struktable makes use of the FTIR (frustrated total internal reflection) effect. Therefore, infrared LEDs are placed around the acrylic top, and finger touches reflect the light into the camera on the bottom of the table. Only one PC is needed for tracking, gesture recognition and 2D/3D rendering of the GUI. A beamer then projects the GUI onto the surface.
There is currently one Struktable available for rent.
Production of more tables is possible in small numbers.

Applications for the Struktable are implemented in vvvv, a rapid prototyping software. The tracking algorithms have been realised by the Vienna University of Technology. Basic applications are ready for use, while custom software can be developed by Strukt on demand.
