Flickr Finds: Multitasking Wallunit

051208_sz_catskillstv.jpgWhile perusing Flickr for décor ideas we came upon a New Yorker's solution for packing a media center, library, and home office in one wall within her small bedroom.

Using Ikea's Ivar shelving unit as her base, Gail built out folding doors, a turntable tray, a keyboard tray, and a desk...

She built a cabinet below her computer to store her printer and external hard-drive. Her scanner is tucked away on a shelf above her computer. All A/V components fit in the Ivar shelving unit to the left of her TV. She painted everything one color so it looks like it's all part of the same piece. Gail wouldn't let us show a more close-up shot of her set-up so you'll just have to go to her Flickr page to see what she's done.

We love the idea, but our one suggestion is installing a bulletin board behind her computer to hide those dangling wires in this photo.

The second photo -- the detail of my desktop -- was taken about three years earlier and in a different context than the main photo.

The cat's name is Otis.

Thanks. Gail

great job, gail - i for one would love to see more since it's such a great idea useful for all of us trying to incorporate storage and office equipment into small spaces and if you have time to post some more details about where you bought the other supplies (unless they all came from ikea) to make the whole unit we would really appreciate it. the problem with trying to make use of wall space is the expense of a pre-made piece or the work if you've never built anything before. this is really great!

I just ordered pre-cut lumber from a lumber store to augment the unit. Most is plywood with a birch veneer. I used roll veneer to cover the edges, but if you are going to paint you need not even do that. The sliders for a pull-out turntable tray and keyboard tray are available from any hardware store and just require adherence to the old adage measure twice, cut once, otherwise you'll end up buying a new board.

The small bookshelf to the right that mimics the Ivar look was made entirely by me, but the secret is easy: angle brackets. No joinery other than small angle brackets and screws and anyone can do it.
