It's a sad fact that I don't own a single holiday song, in any format. Just this week, however, my 4 year old has started demanding xmas songs every night at bedtime, so I've had to dredge them up from the dark recesses of my childhood brain, rusty, off key, and with incomplete lyrics. I really need to buy some xmas tunes and I appreciate all the suggestions here - Bruce and Eartha now on my list. My son, of course, is most interested in "Rudolph." My own childhood favorite, which I'll probably have to inflict on him: "A Christmas Together, with John Denver and the Muppets." Oh yeah.

Definitely white, shiny timeless white, to match my other white accents (which mostly don't exist yet, but we're getting there), brighten up my dark-ish living room, and offset my darker wood furniture.

Did I mention that I currently don't have a stereo of any kind, and I've been playing cd's on my crappy tv/dvd player? I'm just sayin'...

We always sit around the record player in my Grandma's family room and listen to great classics like that. It would be great to carry on an updated version of the tradition with our son (especially since it's his first Christmas).

We've just moved into a house in which the previous tenants felt it was a good idea to spray paint the cabinets with tremclad. So, a lovely new black sound system would spruce up the kitchen quite a bit (with two babies under two and at the tail end of a massive international move we don't have the money, time or energy to fix the cabinets at the moment). And, the song would have to be "Fairytale of New York" by the Pogues - still the best Holiday song in my opinion.

For me, it'd have to be a nostalgia party, playing Erlend Oye's cover of "Last Christmas," a sad one, but it brings back happy memories of my German 7th grade students learning all the words. Give me that song and a glass of gluehwein (spiced hot wine, yum!) and I'll be in the Christmas spirit.

It also reminds me of the friend who introduced me to the song, in Switzerland no less, and the very white Christmas we had that year. White please!

As a kid, I was cast-- and *repeatedly,* I might add-- in our local theater's production of "Scrooge!" I worked my way up from 2nd Smallest Cratchit Child to Eldest Cratchit Child to Head Ruffian to Fezziwig Party Guest (With grown-up clothes, even!) over the years. So for me, Christmas is inextricably entwined with the music of Leslie Bricusse and the score of "Scrooge!". If I had the white one (white, like the snows falling on Camden Town, or the ethereal gown of the Ghost of Christmas Past), I'd be recalling eight years' worth of "step-ball-change, turn, kick!" in my living room while singing "Father Christmas."

Or perhaps "Thank You Very Much" would be more appropriate?

    God bless us every one!

I'm not much for religion, but I can get down right chokey about the reverence given mother and child in Christmas hymns. In that tradition, the first holiday song I would play is "Bring a Torch. Jeanette, Isabella" by Sufjan Stevens.

"Ah... ah... beautiful is the mother. Ah... ah... beautiful is her son."

    and

"Quietly come and whisper, hush...hush, peacefully now he sleeps."

I think the lo-fi popping and the sweet simplicity of the song would sound just right on a black Geneva.

I am not totally a cynic but I'm also not at all Christian, so I think I'd start with Sweet Honey in the Rock's "Will You Harbor Me" - to think about what we do, at this time in the year with so much attention to giving and generosity, in our personal lives for what is right, for those we love, and for those in great need whom we have never met.

    It's a haunting song.

I think I would play 'Over the River and Through the Woods'. My aunt has recently discovered, through some intense genealogical detective-work, that Mrs. Child was our relative. However, more interestingy, my aunt also shared with us this woman's incredible history. She was one of the earliest American women to earn a living from her writing which included some early anti-slavery appeals. She knew that writing on this subject at the time would be widely unpopular and would significantly damage her public image. Nevertheless, she believed the anti-slavery cause to be the most crucial of her time and so spoke her opinions publicly and privately aided in the Underground Railroad.

So, I would play her song in tribute to a woman who stood up for what she believed in and could also write a nice little song about a sleighride to grandma's house.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yule-tide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.

    Everybody knows a turkey
    and some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santa's on his way
    He's loaded lots of toys
    and goodies on his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
    To see if reindeer
    really know how to fly.

And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
    Although it's been said
    many times, many ways
    Merry Christmas to you.

Christmas And The Beads Of Sweat
    Come young braves
    Come young children
Come to the book of love with me
Respect your brothers and your sisters
Come to the book of love
    I know it ain't easy
But we're gonna look for a better day
    Come young braves
    Come young children.

I love my country as it dies
In war and pain before my eyes
I walk the streets where disrespect has been
The sins of politics, the politics of sin
The heartlessness that darkens my soul
    On Christmas.

Red and silver on the leaves
Fallen white snow runs softly through the trees
Madonnas weep for wars of hell
They blow out the candles and haunt Noel
The missing love that rings through the work
    On Christmas.

Black panther brothers bound in jail
Chicago seven and the justice scale
    Homeless Indian on Manhattan Isle
All God's sons have gone to trial
And all God's love is out of style
    On Christmas.

    Christmas in my soul
    Christmas in my soul
    Christmas in my soul.

This would bring much joy to Mudville. My trusty Nakamichi just bit the dust and thus I have been early Hanukah (maybe not so early) shopping to console myself and seek alternatives. And of course this made it's way to the top of the list....

So, specially as Hanukah lacks a bit in the decor department (no dancing elves, leaping reindeer or jolly Santas to embroider on sweaters) a sweet bit of audio joy could be easily adorned with a nice modernist menorah?? a little Jonathan Adler? and perhaps some Adam Sandler (what would be the jewish version of carolling?) in the background.

For the longest time, I though Bing Crosby was the coolest guy ever for departing from his usual crooning, and I felt a little sheepish when I finally learned who the real group was. Once I figured it out, I kept it in my playlist for days. In April.

"Footprints" by BareNaked Ladies. It's soft and romantic and actually sort of sad, and about as far from "traditional" as you can get. By far my favorite Christmas song of all time.

"I followed footprints in the snow
never knowing if i was right behind you
looking down, no one would know
I wasn't walking hand in hand beside you..."

For that matter, I suppose I'd be playing BNL's whole Christmas album on the system, most of which is considerably happier and bouncier (not to mention more traditional). But that's the one I'd play first.

And I would have to go with black since it goes with everything and my taste in furniture is, shall we say, eclectic.

I am extremely ambivalent about Christmas in general.

On the one hand, I love the smells of pine and cinnamon, and am so enthusiastic that I begin my shopping on the day and weeks after the 25th and finish my shopping before Thanksgiving. On the other hand, I am so irritated by it that I never decorate my apartment, or step foot into any store (besides the grocery store) between Thanksgiving and Christmas in order to avoid the crowds, the tinsel, and frazzled vibe that spreads like a disease. And, of course, I've never left the house on Black Friday, because I have such a dread of the madness that this day signifies-- including the beginning of the Christmas season and the over-the-top commercialism it signifies to so many consumers.

My relationship to Christmas music is equally ambivalent. Within a few weeks, I get so aggravated by the motion-sensitive Dancing Santas and canned music that I want to scream. But, I also find myself longing to hearing the familiar songs with their comfortable nostalgia. There is nothing like a cold day spent in a warm kitchen, preparing a labor-intensive and love-saturated meal, with family and friends-- and, yes, appropriate music.

In my case, I have found a happy holiday mix that begins with: Happy Xmas (War Is Over) by John Lennon, that segues into some Beatles albums, then into Over the Rhine's non-traditional, but smoky, indie-rock flavored folk CD "Snow Angel", before letting someone else have the stereo to play the more traditional mixes.

If I had this stereo, I may have the pleasure of having full control over the music it plays (as it will be mine, as opposed to always "borrowing" the sound system... which I have always done because I don't own one); and it would be delightful to test out the far edges of my music library on it: from classical to punk rock, electronic to folk when I'm not succumbing to the holiday music urge. It could be my Christmas stand-in for my decoration-less apartment (in red, or course)... and may even inspire me to put some other festive accents next to it!

I would play "Snow" from Loreena McKennitt's A Winter Garden: Five Songs for the Season. Her wonderful voice gives the song—and the entire album—a wonderful old world feel. What a great reminder of how precious the earth is, how magical nature can be, and of the quiet that snow can provide (even in nyc), allowing us to take a pause and remember the simplest of pleasures cannot be bought. The lyrics are below, from the poem by Archibald Lampman.

(And red is the perfect color for EVERY season!)

    SNOW
    Lyric: Archibald Lampman (1861-1899)
    Music: Loreena McKennitt
White are the far-off plains, and white
    The fading forests grow;
The wind dies out along the height,
    And denser still the snow
A gathering weight on roof and tree,
    Falls down scarce audibly
    The meadows and far-sheeted streams
    Lie still without a sound;
Like some soft minister of dreams
    The snow-fall hoods me round;
In wood and water, earth and air
    A silence everywhere
    Save when at lonely intervals
    Some farmer's sleigh, urged on,
With rustling runners and sharp bells
    Swings by me and is gone;
Or from the empty waste I hear
    A sound remote and clear
The barking of a dog, or call
    To cattle, sharply pealed,
Borne echoing from some wayside stall
    Or barnyard far afield;
Then all is silent and the snow falls
    Settling soft and slow
The evening deepens and the grey
    Folds closer earth and sky
The world seems shrouded, far away.
Its noises sleep, and I as secret as
Yon buried stream plod dumbly on and dream.

Used to laugh and call it names (like tinny!).
    They wouldn't let poor Geneva
    Have any music plays.
    Then one foggy Friday eve
    Apartment Therapy came to say:
Geneva with your looks so nice,
Won't you grace my homepage tonight.
Then all of the speakers loved her

My mom was the parent who wasn't really into music, who even seemed a little annoyed when my dad played it. But every year when we were decorating the tree, she would get this crate down from the front hall closet. The box contained her entire record collection - not more than a dozen LPs. The one we liked best was by Bing Crosby, with the faded cover and him smiling so cheesily. So in that spirit, I'd play that album while decorating the tree.

I'd play Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. And as much as I'd like it in red, I'd chose the sound system in black.

"Wonderful Christmastime" by Paul McCartney because it's so aggressive and smacks of trying too hard. It's like being at a club where the DJ keeps playing songs with lyrics like "Everybody's dancing!" and "Get out on the dance floor!" but everyone just stands around looking uncomfortable. I guess I appreciate the fact that someone is trying so hard to make me have a good time. Or a "simply wonderful Christmastime."

Hands down it is Barenaked Ladies along with Sarah Mclachlan recorded backstage on the cuff singing "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen". This is the most awesome range of talent singing a most cherished Christmas Song!
