I often share code over IM to review problems with another developer. Smileys will make any bit of code pretty much doomed to come out wrong on the other side.
So, this tip from Mac OS X Hints (I could copy/paste it in but this is where I learned about it) disables smileys in iChat.

A surge protector is a must when you have electronic equipment but the most expensive is not always the best. Many home users would be well served with a $3 MOV protector that they discard and replace periodically, as they would with a more expensive protector using the same MOVs, which will also wear out.

Hrm. Tech tip...Migrating an old mac to a new one? Forget the migration manager, that always seems to lose a couple of settings in the process for me. Instead, do a time machine backup of the old computer. Pop the Leopard disc into the new machine and boot from that, then do a clean install from the time machine backup of the old computer. Your new machine will look exactly like the old one!
As for cases, I'd have to go for the sleeve simply because I don't know that the hard shell will fit the supposed new macbook (which I'll be buying as soon as it releases, I think).

Several companies (e.g. blueLounge, belkin) make clean power strips for hiding the cords. Another alternative is to velcro the power strip to the underside of your desk. Tech tip? If you are getting a mac for a computer novice, splurge on that Apple Care. I got my mother (who is 82 yrs old) an iMac with the Apple Care plan. Is she has a problem I can't fix for her (and sometimes even when I could have fixed it), she calls the Apple Care number, never has a long wait, and they very very patiently walk her through the fix. This is even when the problem isn't an Apple one. They are very good at what they do and kind, to boot.

So simple, yet so useful. To save a list of files in a directory as a text file under Windows, do the following:
- Open a DOS window (Start > Run > cmd).
- Navigate to the relevant directory, for example:
d:
cd files\music\
- Execute the following command:
dir /B /ON > list.txt
This command prints to a file (list.txt) the file and folder names in the folder. The names are in alphabetical order with no extraneous info such as creation date and so on.

My favorite tip that has helped me is bookmarking my fav AT posts and organizing them in bookmarks, such as....AT good tips, AT inspiration...etc. lol perhaps not the greatest or smartest tip, but I'm not all tech-y. I would recommend going out with someone who is...such as javal's tips.
krink sleeve pleeease! perfect for school.

One of the best tools for any Mac user. If you have a firewire hard drive (or usb for intel macs) you can build a bootable external drive just by choosing that drive during the install process from the OS X DVD. Hope you never need it but if you have software corruption it can help you recover your data in a bind. P.S. this will also work with a hard drive based ipod, but should not be used for extended times.

A keyboard shortcut that I've found very useful in Firefox (both Mac and PC) is Ctrl Tab to cycle forward through tabs. You can also use Ctrl Shift Tab to cycle backwards.

I think I got this idea from Real Simple. Use an empty toilet paper roll to hold your cords together. Fold up the cord and slide it in. This is best for behind the tv or desk where it won't be seen perhaps, but it works great in a pinch.
I would love to win the soft sleeve.

ALT Tab
If you've got a bunch of applications open in Windows and want to switch to a different one, there's a faster way than moving your mouse to the toolbar and clicking the other application you want to open. Just hold down the ALT key with your left thumb (if you're right-handed, that is) and then hit the Tab key with your left pinky or ring finger...keep you thumb down and keep pressing Tab over and over until the little box is highlighting the program you want to switch to, then just release the ALT key.

Wow, there are some great tips listed here! I have learned so much from reading all of the great advice! A couple of the tips I was going to post have already been said so let me leave one related to rechargeable batteries. I don't know about you, but I am constantly needing AA batteries for my wireless keyboard, wireless mouse (I have an iMac) my digital camera, etc. So, I have 2 different kodak rechargeable battery kits. One is constantly sitting in the electrical outlet charging up 4 batteries while the other 4 batteries are in my devices. So when the batteries in my keyboard and mouse run out of charge, I always have recharged ones ready to go to replace them. So, my rechargeable batteries are always in a state of constant rotation. Since I started doing this backup system with the batteries, I have never had to wait for my batteries to recharge, and I always have charge ones ready to go at a seconds notice. Hope this helps. Walmart carries the kits for about $10.

Not specifically Apple-oriented -- just an observation that it is entirely possible to put executables (java scripts in particular, but various others work too) into the folder that maps to your "Links" list... And when they are executed, they do so from the context of the webpage you are currently browsing, as though they were embedded in the source code for that page.
Hardshell, please.

and my favorite tech tip is if u don't have an external hard drive, save your important files and photos somewhere on the internet. E-mailing them to yourself is a good idea since a lot of e-mail services have a lot of storage.

Sometime uninstalling programs isn't as easy as it seems for a mac. That is why I use AppCleaner. It's small, easy to use, thorough and, best of all, free.
AppCleaner
Bonus: If you use Firefox, check out Fast Dial if you haven't already.
Extra Bonus: There is an iTunes plugin that will tell you when artists in your library are playing locally. Check out iConcertCal.
That sleeve is rather dapper.

command-w saved my life. well, maybe that's a stretch, but i'm a huge fan of this shortcut. i am a recent convert to mac (switching from my once-solid toshiba laptop of four years to a new macbook pro after spilling a glass of wine on the keyboard) and only recently learned of the ability to close individual tabs with command-w. i know, i know... the shortcut is shown in the file menu and i should have noticed it earlier. anyhow, if you're a fast internet browser like me, command-t and -w are your best friends.

Hi- My favorite new tech thing right now is Evernote. It's a website & downloadable application (though I've only used the online portion) that functions like a digital notebook / sketchpad / bookmark list and archive all in one. The best part for me is that it is visual, so instead of having to read through a bunch of text to find what you're looking for, you can just scan through the pics you've saved (you can save notes that are all text also). Every "note" you create from a web clipping also stores the site info that it was clipped from, so you can link back easily. I'm not affiliated w/ them in any way, but just thought I'd try it out because it sounded cool and was free, and have found myself using it more than I expected. It's especially great for clipping and saving pics from AT and recipes from thekitchn, and you can create different notebooks such as "furniture", "recipes", "pets", etc. You can check it out here: http://www.evernote.com
If I win, I would take the hard case macbook case and the 1st gen iphone case.

Whenever I receive a new piece of software or hardware, I always go through the options and preferences. I always learn about some sort of functionality that I wouldn't otherwise know.

Download and set up FunctionFlip. It allows you to set some of your function keys to default to hardware function while leaving others as software function.
On my Macbook, I like to use the function keys for volume (hardware) but I'd rather leave F8, F9, and F10 as expose controllers (software). FunctionFlip lets you set this up, and then the other function is accessed by holding down the fn key.
