My favorite tech tip/app is my recently acquired VMware Fusion software! I use Windows every once in a while for school, but Parallels (my former virtualization software) was constantly crashing! VMWare Fusion is awesome, so reliable, and a MUST for anyone with a Mac that needs access to Windows.

If you use a Mac the single, most useful tip I can provide is to look into Quicksilver. It is an "application launcher on steroids." (An alternative would be Launchbar). For those who use the keyboard a lot it truly is an indispensable piece of software.

Yakuake - It gives you multiple Konsoles that roll down like the console in Quake and many FPS games since. It let's you store all your terminals out of the way until needed. Great for any KDE desktop.

It has zip to do with Apple, but it's a damn nice app.

I often share code over IM to review problems with another developer. Smileys will make any bit of code pretty much doomed to come out wrong on the other side.

So, this tip from Mac OS X Hints (I could copy/paste it in but this is where I learned about it) disables smileys in iChat.

My favorite tech tip is to bind some of your hotkeys (dashboard, show desktop, expose) to your extra mouse buttons. This is especially nice for laptop users who normally have to press the function key and the F12 key to get to the software shortcuts vs the hardware stuff like changing volume.

i'd go with the krink. i need the space station so bad, i have wires everywhere, even though i have a wireless mouse and keyboard...

little tip i use all the time the ctrl scroll for zoom.

i use it when (god forbid) i have to put something in powerpoint for work and i need to get an up close and quick look to align something.

ALso great if you're watching a vid on the web, and you don't want full screen, but their player is so small (i have a 24" screen, so everything is small...) just ctrl and scroll it bigger.

A surge protector is a must when you have electronic equipment but the most expensive is not always the best. Many home users would be well served with a $3 MOV protector that they discard and replace periodically, as they would with a more expensive protector using the same MOVs, which will also wear out.

Also, Gridmove is a great program for those with larger monitors. You can divide your monitor space and have windows snap in place in each compartment.

Hrm. Tech tip...Migrating an old mac to a new one? Forget the migration manager, that always seems to lose a couple of settings in the process for me. Instead, do a time machine backup of the old computer. Pop the Leopard disc into the new machine and boot from that, then do a clean install from the time machine backup of the old computer. Your new machine will look exactly like the old one!

As for cases, I'd have to go for the sleeve simply because I don't know that the hard shell will fit the supposed new macbook (which I'll be buying as soon as it releases, I think).

Several companies (e.g. blueLounge, belkin) make clean power strips for hiding the cords. Another alternative is to velcro the power strip to the underside of your desk. I've velcro-ed a power strip, USB hub, and several of those AC adapters, and even a USB backup hardrive. You can easily rearrange them as you need, and the roomba has fewer cords to run into.

Tech tip? If you are getting a mac for a computer novice, splurge on that Apple Care. I got my mother (who is 82 yrs old) an iMac with the Apple Care plan. Is she has a problem I can't fix for her (and sometimes even when I could have fixed it), she calls the Apple Care number, never has a long wait, and they very very patiently walk her through the fix. This is even when the problem isn't an Apple one. They are very good at what they do and kind, to boot.

I have a MacBook Pro with the wide screen (17 inches), so I'd have to go with the space station, as the sleeves probably won't fit.

If you don't keep your mac on overnight, you need to run regular maintenance scripts. Your mac is configured to run these services at night (between 3:15 & 5:30 AM); however, when it's shut down or in sleep mode, it can't perform these routines & log files & temp. files won't get cleaned out. You can use the utilities that come with your mac or use freeware like MacJanitor or Anacron.

So simple, yet so useful. To save a list of files in a directory as a text file under Windows, do the following:

- Open a DOS window (Start > Run > cmd).
- Navigate to the relevant directory, for example:
d:
cd files\music\
- Execute the following command:
dir /B /ON > list.txt

This command prints to a file (list.txt) the file and folder names in the folder. The names are in alphabetical order with no extraneous info such as creation date and so on.

Oh and I'd love the Space Station! It's so Space 1999.

One of the best tools for any Mac user. If you have a firewire hard drive (or usb for intel macs) you can build a bootable external drive just by choosing that drive during the install process from the OS X DVD. Hope you never need it but if you have software corruption it can help you recover your data in a bind. P.S. this will also work with a hard drive based ipod, but should not be used for extended times.

ALT Tab

If you've got a bunch of applications open in Windows and want to switch to a different one, there's a faster way than moving your mouse to the toolbar and clicking the other application you want to open. Just hold down the ALT key with your left thumb (if you're right-handed, that is) and then hit the Tab key with your left pinky or ring finger...keep you thumb down and keep pressing Tab over and over until the little box is highlighting the program you want to switch to, then just release the ALT key.

Wow, there are some great tips listed here! I have learned so much from reading all of the great advice! A couple of the tips I was going to post have already been said so let me leave one related to rechargeable batteries. I don't know about you, but I am constantly needing AA batteries for my wireless keyboard, wireless mouse (I have an iMac) my digital camera, etc. So, I have 2 different kodak rechargeable battery kits. One is constantly sitting in the electrical outlet charging up 4 batteries while the other 4 batteries are in my devices. So when the batteries in my keyboard and mouse run out of charge, I always have recharged ones ready to go to replace them. So, my rechargeable batteries are always in a state of constant rotation. Since I started doing this backup system with the batteries, I have never had to wait for my batteries to recharge, and I always have charge ones ready to go at a seconds notice. Hope this helps. Walmart carries the kits for about $10.

Not specifically Apple-oriented -- just an observation that it is entirely possible to put executables (java scripts in particular, but various others work too) into the folder that maps to your "Links" list... And when they are executed, they do so from the context of the webpage you are currently browsing, as though they were embedded in the source code for that page.

Hi- My favorite new tech thing right now is Evernote. It's a website & downloadable application (though I've only used the online portion) that functions like a digital notebook / sketchpad / bookmark list and archive all in one. The best part for me is that it is visual, so instead of having to read through a bunch of text to find what you're looking for, you can just scan through the pics you've saved (you can save notes that are all text also). Every "note" you create from a web clipping also stores the site info that it was clipped from, so you can link back easily. I'm not affiliated w/ them in any way, but just thought I'd try it out because it sounded cool and was free, and have found myself using it more than I expected. It's especially great for clipping and saving pics from AT and recipes from thekitchn, and you can create different notebooks such as "furniture", "recipes", "pets", etc. You can check it out here: http://www.evernote.com

If I win, I would take the hard case macbook case and the 1st gen iphone case.
