James Horner's work on the soundtrack to "Sneakers" (1992) was amazing, and is far and above my favorite. The score has an ethereal, jazzy feel that sets the mood right away in the opening credits, and gives incredible depth to the on-screen story.

It's tough to settle on just one, but in terms of "movie themes which I find myself most often humming, and must therefore be my favorite" I have chosen:

Jerry Goldsmith's incredible, inspiring and intense score for STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE.

Many is the time I've had the Klingon Battle Theme wedged soundly in my brain. Traipsing down the sidewalk making the synth noises and mouthing the string/flute arpeggios, no doubt looking like a person who is insane. Some people sing pop songs in the shower. I sing what happens when Spock jets into the V'ger entity for the first time.

The soundtrack to 300 is awesome. I was looking at this stereo setup just last week as my living room is currently being remodeled. I've already place speaker wire in the 4 corners of the ceiling. If I won this, I would be the happiest man in the world and with the money I've saved, I can splurge on a bigger tv hahaha

best scores, i think, are David Lynch movies, Tim Burton flicks (gotta love Danny "Boingo" Elfman!), Quentin Tarantino digs, and the entire Lord of the Rings series!

as for soundtracks, right now my favorite is Into the Wild because i love me some Eddie Vedder, but i have always loved The Lost Boys, The Crow, Pump up the Volume, Pretty in Pink, Ghost World, Pulp Fiction, DIRTY DANCING!!, High Fidelity, Eddie and the Cruisers, Empire Records, hehe what about The Jazz Singer??, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Virgin Suicides, ohoh Lost in Translation...i could go on, but i gotta run!

Featuring The Clash, Violent Femmes, The Pixies, Motörhead, Echo & The Bunnymen, and BOTH Paul McCartney's and Guns N' Roses' versions of 'Live and Let Die'. C'mon!

Also, the film itself contains a firefight between, of all people, John Cusack and Dan Ackroyd. I bet it sounds glorious in globular 5.1.

Complete toss up between Garden State and Stranger than Fiction. With Garden State can't beat the chill I get hearing Coldplay's Don't Panic and thinking of the first time i saw the film or the sublime cover of The Postal Service's Such Great Heights by Iron & Wine; however, equally impressive is the eclectic mix Stranger than Fiction gives with empowering songs by Spoon, some beautiful things made just for the fim, and of course the very inspiring Whole Wide World by Wrekless Eric. It's just too hard to choose.

It's tough to narrow it down to only one. Almost Famous might seem an obvious selection, but one that I always turn up when it shuffles up is Wild West West. But, if I could listen to only one, for hours on end, day after day, it would have to be Pink Floyd's The Wall. And since I did just that on a long programming project a few years back, I know it's not just idle speculation.

Ok. My favorite is the Singles soundtrack. But, based on the number of pure plays, start to finish, I have ranked my top 4 below (in honor of High Fidelity, which isn't on the list).....
1.Reality Bites - great soundtrack from start to finish. I wore this one out.
2. Singles soundtrack - Drown by the Pumpkins is excellent and was part of the beginning of Steven Malkmus's hatred for the band. Great Westerberg tunes....heck nearly everything is great on it.
3. Swingers - I'm Beginning to See the Light is definitely my favorite. Favreau always picks some great tunes in his flicks.
4. Dazed and Confused - too many great tunes to name.

Hands down, the soundtrack for Water by mychael deena. A beautiful, haunting, lush movie directed by deepa mehta the soundtrack evokes the sounds, scents and tastes of the film - and india. instantly transported when i listen, it lets me "see" color.

Close second...sgt pepper's lonely hearts club band. if you can find it on a record, even better. turn it on, close your eyes and you would never think it was released in 1967.

"Excalibur" has some FABULOUS music in it! That's the first time I can remember hearing "Carmina Burana" and I had to pause on the credits at the end to see what that haunting piece of music was.

Another one that haunts me in a different way is the soundtrack from "Galipoli". Strauss' "Roses From The South" is still one of my favorite uplifting songs.

Wow. It's amazing to see the variety of favorites posted here. I myself have to go with Pulp Fiction. It spans a wide genre, from Chuck Berry to the Jungle Boogie, and they were even kind enough to provide us with the audio from great scenes in the movie.

In fact, I heard the soundtrack before I saw the movie, and it made me want to see the movie that much more.

The Feather theme from Forrest Gump. good melody with just enough amount of schmaltz.

I'm a sucker for anything composed by John Williams or Michael Kamen. Kamen left us far too early.

i don't know if this counts, but the soundtrack for "the lion king" on broadway is amazing. i saw the show in 1996 but still sing very loudly to each song when i happen to hear them.

Oh man, the Vangelis soundtrack from Blade Runner is AWESOME - it's everything I wished the future would have been when I was a kid.
