Good Question: Headphone Recomendation?

2007-06-27-headphones.jpgBrian writes us...

I'm in the market for some headphones to hook into my home theatre system. I'm thinking of going wired rather than wireless as most wireless ones don't seem to get good reviews. I'm looking to spend around $100 or so. Any thoughts?

Well, Brian, one of our Home Tech Finalists, Rene, uses the Sennheiser RS 130 Wireless Headphones. BUT you said you didn't want wireless, so here are a few non-wireless options we recommend. And of course, dear readers, we want to know what you would recommend to your fellow reader, so please comment!

Senneheiser's always a good bet, and recommended to us by all our DJ friends. CNET recommends this pair of HD 280 Pro's, which retail for $100:

If you're looking for less bulk, try in-ear earphones, like the the Creative Zen Aurvana, which retail for $75.

I have a pair of Shure E2C's that I really like, though I'm not much of an audiophile.

I own many headphones. I agree Sennheisers are a great place to start. The ones I own in your price range are the Sennheiser HD555 and Grado SD60.

The Sennheiser HD555 are awesome for the price. Like all Sennheiser, I think they are the extremely comfortable and deliver a clear, warm, consistent sound.

I also recommend the Grado SD 60. Not known for their comfort, but known for the open-air design which gives a more clearer, sparkly sound then the Sennheisers.

I agree with danzo, Grado SD 60's are great sound for the price. You can find others here: www.headfi.org It's a great resource for anything related to headphones. Might have to do a little trolling through the forum, but you'll find everything you need there.

You could step up to the Grado SR80s for $100. It really depends on whether you want open or sealed. Open sounds better in almost all cases, but will bother people around you and don't block out external sound much. Sealed phones block out quite a bit and don't bother people around you, but don't sound quite as spacious and detailed. I have a pair of each: Sennheiser HD212s ($60) for planes and trains and Grado SR125s for home use.
Take a look at www.headphone.com. Great reviews for all the cans they sell.
