Good Question: Use Your Imagination

2007-0510imagination.jpg

Dear AT:Home Tech Readers, Maybe it's an "old wiring-safe" dimmer switch*, or a whole-house lighting control system you can take with you easily when you move places...we want to know, what technology for your home do you wish existed?

Let us know, the wilder the better. And if we think it might actually exist, we'll research it and let you know--or speak up if you know what someone else wishes for exists.

*Our building is old, and even though the wiring was updated at some point, the super won't let us install a dimmer switch, even if we pay for some serious quality in that dimmer switch--boo hoo!

I would love a host thats all automated.
Now, I know there are systems that can do it, but I want standards and modularity then you can connect anything up to the central system that will automatically just start recognize it and integrate it into the system!

Of course, that will never happy, company's are more interested in locking you in, not making life easier!

As much as I am tempted to write that I wish I had a building-wide T3 line on a WiFi connection, or fiberoptic CAD cable running through my apartment, I'm truly long for OUTLETS in LOGICAL places!

I mean really, what good does an outlet inside a closet do one when the next closest one is 20' away!

Oh how I long for at least one, one measly outlet accessable from the kitchen counter...It's damn tragic to have to run a powerstrip to plug in the coffee machine and grinder...

*weep weep*

My building is from 1926, and all the lights have dimmer switches. And judging from the way they do other repairs around the place I *highly* doubt they redid the wiring. I think your landlord might be, um, crazy. Also a quick look at the collective wisdom of the internet reveals no mention of problems with dimmers and old wiring.

My dream technology is some wireless speakers that actually sound good. And maybe a robot.

Julian, you read my mind--we must live in the same apartment! I have a 4 plug outlet in my closet (totally uncalled for) which is by my front door entry way (where I plug in nothing). And the one in my kitchen is partially obscured by the fridge!

I'd invent a baseboard that folds down every couple feet to reveal an outlet wherever you need it, almost like an unlimited powerstrip. And it'd be nice and low to the floor so your furniture doesn't have to stick out so far from the wall. To dream...
