Good Questions: Display Troubleshooting

2008-1-25-laptoptv.jpg
Dear Unplggd,
I have a Acoustic Solutions TV (LCD26805HD). I have bought all the correct cables (I think), one is a HDMI to DVI-D cable and the other is a audio cable, which is a Mini Jack to 2 RCA cables. I am able to get my desktop image to be on my TV screen, but thats it. There are no desktop icons on the screen and when I open a program, like Autocad or play Windows Media Player nothing comes up on the TV. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My computer is a Toshiba P100 laptop.

Thanks!
Mark

We're stumped, unless maybe it has something to do with the display settings. We found a helpful video that teaches you all the basics of hooking up your computer to your television, but your problem sounds like it may be specific to your setup. Anyone want to take a guess to what's going on?

Does your Toshiba P100 support dual displays, meaning its LCD as well as a second monitor? This could be the reason you're only seeing the desktop image on the TV. Try "Mirroring" both outputs (Mac-centric terminology), to make a single output to the laptop screen and TV.

It sounds like your desktop is extended onto the TV, which means that it adds the extra space provided by your tv to your desktop. If you go into your display properties, click on the settings tab, and click on the box labeled "2", you should see a checkbox at the bottom that says "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor."
Uncheck that box, apply the settings, and you should then be able to see your desktop properly.

If you're not able to mirror directly from your Windows setting, you might look into a program called Ultramon, which allows you to enable that feature.
