Good Questions: Find My Tivo a Home

2007-06-21gqfireplace.jpg

Hi AT, I'm addicted to AT and check in a few times a day, so I thought I'd finally post my own good question. My husband and I are nearly finished renovating our fireplace (we completely demo-ed ugly brick surround with raised hearth with oak mantle.)

We mounted our flat panel tv above mantle and now we need to find a storage solution for the tivo receiver and dvd player which are now just sitting on the floor. We want to find something that will go to the left of the fireplace where the components are now. The space is about 35" wide, so we need it to be narrower than that. Can't seem to find anything that isn't too expensive and where the components can sit on shelf underneath and not just on top of a table.

Also anyone know of a fireplace screen like the one in my photo (I've photoshopped this one in. I love it but it's $1300- ouch! from The Woven Company)

Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks, Kricket

2007-06-21danishsidetable.jpgDear Kricket,

Our initial thought was get those components into a cabinet out of sight! But we quickly realized you're going to have to have some sort of line-of-sight to be able to operate the Tivo. So we put our thinking cap on and set out in search of an attractive end table with a slim shelf that would camouflage the components nicely. However, open shelves means more cord exposure and no opportunity to hide the cord clutter. So, choose wisely. A heavier table with some sort of enclosed shelves may provide you with the cord cover you need.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:
West Elm's Narrow Leg End Table
Urban Outfitters Danish Modern Side Table
IKEA's Lack TV Table
CB2's Outline Side Table

Readers, help us out! Surely there are many more solutions than the one's we've just found.

We have a Mythbox, so I'm not too sure about the physical properties of the TiVo, but does it have an IR port anywhere on it? Because if so, you can get a teensy sticky IR receiver for a few bucks and stick that outside of a closed cabinet so your tivo and components will work.
Or, if you're handy with computers, build a computer with a big honkin' raid array and install Myth on it, and have your own infinitely customizable DVR that you can hide anywhere and run IR receivers to! This is only if you're incredibly nerdy, though, and judging by the amount of natural light in your house I'm guessing probably not (we have "Warning" stickers around the windows so we don't accidentally draw the curtains and singe our pasty selves).
We have an Ikea cabinet for our components, and it has frosted doors that don't show much but the remotes work great through. Something to consider?

I'd check out the end table options at overstock.com.They have some discontinued pieces from the Todd Oldham/La-Z-Boy line:

...another end-table that might work with the zen-modern vibe you've got going on in the room:

...and an inexpensive one with a design that could help hide the cords:

Maybe a small marble topped plant stand.

The marble works well because it sorta keeps the components cool.

If you're handy, that would be a great little place for a built in. Maybe make a pillow top for additional seating if ever needed.
