Good Questions from AT Chicago

080108_sz_atchi.jpg Over at AT Chi-town, reader LKCHI is trying to figure out what to do to hide her cable box. Because her fancy, new flat screen is mounted on the wall she can't just tuck her box behind it...

AT readers have suggested to LKCHI to mount a floating shelf or credenza to tuck her cable box into, but do you Unplggd readers have a better solution for LKCHI?

Our suggestion would be to put a credenza or long shelf underneath the TV and then, if the box gets its signal from the remote via radio-frequency rather than infra red, find a beautiful storage box, such as the two below from Kate's Paperie, that the cable box can fit in and cut out holes in the back to thread cords through. Then you can place the pretty storage box on the credenza or shelf and no one will know that it's actually hiding your cable box. A credenza or shelf will also offer you the opportunity to display fresh cut flowers or cute artwork below your TV. 080108_sz_kates.jpg

Why does the cable box need to be near the TV? This. Is. Unplggd! Find a closet, shelf, or cabinet "nearby" to put the cable box. Rip out the base molding. Stick on IR blaster on the face of the TV. Fish the wires in the stud bay behind the wall, down behind and along the base molding, to the cabinet, to the cable box. While your at it, fish one or two additional HDMI cables in there too. Connect your cables to the box, position the IR blaster on the other end, replace the base molding, watch TV.

I think it would be cool to get one of those Sapien bookcases. Put it against the wall to the left or right of the TV, stick the cable box on one shelf, and then fill the rest of the shelves with books or whatever.

@jyw: The Sapiens book case makes sense to me and requires the least amount of effort.

@spoon: Really? All that work just to hide a cable box?

Didn't Belkin come out with a wireless HDMI box sometime ago?

CB2 has a cool night stand that does the trick. It floats on the wall, and has a flip top door. You could also just move the wires, stick it in a cabinet or something.

It looks like the TV is WAY too high. Considering your room is so, um, roomy, I think it could benefit from a flat panel TV rack, like this:
