Good Questions: HDTV Tuner Recommendations

2008-2-1hdtv.jpgDear Unplggd,
I'm interested in getting an HD tuner/antenna for an LCD display, but I'm not sure where to begin. Do you or your readers have any products you could recommend?
Thanks!
James

Got a question you need help with? E-mail us your problem, preferably with a photo, and we'll post your question here.

James,
We're novices when it comes to HDTV tuners, but we did notice that Samsung's products were frequently mentioned on CNet and Crutchfield's HDTV guides. The HD HomeRun from Elgato looks pretty cool, because it connects to your network and allows you to watch over the air HD content on any computer in your home.

Has anyone found a product they really love that they can share with James? Leave us a message in the comments.

Thanks for the question!

The Elgato HD Homerun is on my wishlist since I don't have and don't want a TV. I can plug it in a closet somewhere and catch then catch its signal on my laptop on the porch, in the bed, on the couch.

First, are you sure you need one? If you get your TV signals from cable or satellite, they will provide you with the box to get digital signals, and any TV sold after March of last year has an integrated tuner.
Also, be appraised... the FCC is allocating two $40 coupons per household to offset the cost of a digital converter box.

I am assuming he is referring to an antennae to pick up over the air hd channels. Even if you don't have cable or satellite you can still get hd signals from many stations. If the tv is a recent purchase it should have a built in digital tuner so all you need is a decent antennae. I just bought a new hdtv that isn't installed yet so haven't had a chance to check out what would work best. You have to decide if you want an indoor or outdoor antennae then determine the appropriate one off of that. There is a good antennae website that will tell you what channels you are likely to be able to get given your address, but I can't remember where I saw it.
