Dear Home Tech,
I have a 20" HDTV that has built in speakers on the side. The problem is, these speakers are horrible! Part of the problem is the cable receiver, as right now the volume is up to 100 and it's just comfortable. Should a car drive by, or be traffic outside (which is constant), it's difficult to hear the tv. So, I'm looking for some decent speakers I could add on. Should I go the stereo route? If so, what is a good, budget stereo box and speakers? I've seen combos sold at places like Target and Wal-Mart, but I am not sure how well those will work. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Waylon
Hi Waylon,

I was in the same predicament a while back.
I ended up buying a Philips home theatre in a box. A DVD player/receiver and 5.1 surround... It's not a serious system, I didn't need a monster sound system, I jsut wanted to ensure I got good 5.1 sound for movies etc...
I believe in the end the system cost me $179 or so...

Personally, I wouldn't recommend the Wal-Mart/Target route, but that could just be that I have a preference for stores that specialize in electronics (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.) for these types of items. If you're looking to buy a home theater in a box setup, I'd go to Best Buy and give the Yamaha systems a trial run. I bought one a few years ago complete with 5.1 speakers and receiver and have been very happy with it. If you're looking to go cheaper, try one of the "shelf systems", which offer CD player, receiver, radio, and now even DVD player, all in one nice, compact system. A decent shelf system from a reputable brand (Sony, JVC, etc.) can be picked up for around $100 and at the very least will offer better sound than you're getting out of your TV alone.
