I am looking to build a home theater area in my space but don't want it to overpower the room. In my mind, the ideal setup is a motorized screen that retracts into the ceiling as well as a ceiling mounted projector that can do the same. While motorized ceiling mounted screens seem to be available both new and used at somewhat reasonable prices, motorized ceiling mount projector lifts are extremely expensive, often priced higher than the projector itself. Do you or your readers have any recommendations for more affordable motorized or manual projector lifts that can retract into the ceiling when not in use?
Thanks, Rancho Guy

This post from ikeahacker implies that the ikea tupplar seems to work well. You could have two hooks from the ceiling and hang it whenever you need it.
Projector screen:

Also, a rolling projector stand might do the trick for your projector. Or a wall shelf at the appropriate height on the back wall. That way you could keep it at the correct location permanently.
This would be the budget move. And considering the price of replacement bulbs, I would say its not a bad one. : D Send a pic of your setup when you're done!

If you watch often, don't move everything up and down and around too much. The projector really needs to be set up and left alone, or else you end up having to re-focus and re-balance often.
And the Ikea Hack screen looks like junk. Really, if you love movies, get on Ebay and buy a real screen.
We use our projector and screen for all tv viewing, and it's great. Best thing my husband ever bought.
Rather than ceiling mount, we mounted it on top of our Expedit, which is the right size for all the other devices that went with the home theatre.
