Good Questions: Lighting Automation?

2008_03_24 light automation.jpgOur review of the Lutron Aurora lighting automation system brought up a question"

Dear Unplggd,
I am in the process of researching a few home automation solutions myself. I am curious who else you considered and if X10 was one of those?

Additionally, if you did research others, what put the Lutron AuroRa system above them?
Thanks!
James

Thanks for the question James. For me, simplicity was the first consideration. I didn't want to have to call in a professional to get this running. The only other systems I had considered require a little bit more work because they don't come as a simple kit. Z-wave compatible light switches and a Logitech Harmony 1000 remote would have done the same thing and with more flexibility, but for what I needed upstairs, the Lutron setup was just fine and much easier. For my home theater basement setup though, I will probably go the Z-wave route for the flexibility as I also want to tie in to exterior landscape lighting.

Does anyone else have any experience or opinions to share?

I bought a basic kit from GE using the X10 protocol. I'm running a half dozen lights from it and it was a fairly inexpensive solution. I upgraded and installed one X10 wall receptacle and it does get confused sometimes as it is on a separate power trunk in the house.
