Dear AT: Home Tech, I desperately need some help finding a light fixture for my little dining alcove that doesn't require re-wiring! What used to cover the light bulb was a large plastic globe that broke today when I was changing the bulb (no big loss there). I'm hoping to find something easy to install that could simply fit over the light bulb and add something fun to the room.. any ideas? Thanks,
Jennifer

Dear Jennifer,
We have had the same problem, and found an inexpensive solution. A quick trip to your hardware store to purchase a light socket adapter will allow you to update your lighting with very little effort.
We installed a pendant light into our recessed lighting fixture, using one of these simple screw in adapters that allowed us to plug in IKEA's Knappa pendant lamp into the light socket rather than a light bulb. This may not work perfectly with your set up, so we're throwing this out there for our readers who we hope can share some more ideas for other creative solutions.
Thanks for your question!
oh! I needed some help with this too! thank you... great solution. but in your picture, there seems to be a cap over the section with all the wires.... is that available in hardware stores too? thanks.

I think it might be possible to go to the hardware store and get a new globe.
Measure the diameter of the neck of the old globe, or of the fixture on the ceiling where the globe would sit, and then go check out whether you can find something comparable (or better!) at a lighting store of the lighting section of a big hardware store.
Alternatively, if you can still screw the bulb into light fixture and do something crafty to screen the bare bulb from view in the room. I've done this several times to mask bare bulbs or ugly light fixtures. In my student-hippie days I thumbtacked up the corners of a cool square scarf. Another time I did a similar thing with a huge, gorgeous square of handmade paper from the art store. Depending on your style, you could do something more constructed and finished...
Just make sure anything flammable is several inches from the bulb and you'll be OK!

Hi Amy,
It's actually recessed lighting, so the cap was there before we started. I bet there's something you could buy or make to hide everything, especially if you're installing it instead of a globe. Maybe a small plastic globe and cut a hole for the cord? Anyone out there have any ideas?

I think the opoponax in the last cure replaced the globe with a paper lantern from pearl river. If I remember, she put a hook right next to the fixture and hooked the lanter right on.

you could find a cool lampshade with a bulb clip (as opposed to a harp) and just pop it on upside down. i think urban outfitters has some neat ones that look like those little umbrellas you get in fruity drinks. :)

After using the light socket adapter, how do you keep the light from falling out of it's plug? Also does it go on and off with the light switch? Sorry just a little perplexed.
