Dear AT: Home Tech, Since speaker wires are unsightly, but having a home theater (even a small one) is well worth the money, I was wondering if there are any moderately priced wireless adapters for the speakers. I am not sure if these things exist but would like it to hook up the surround sound and front speakers. Thanks,
Kristen

Dear Kristen,
We know that wireless speakers exist, in fact this Acoustic Research wireless home theater system for $799 has been getting quite a buzz around the blogosphere. However, our guess is that you are happy with what you have, and not looking into a system upgrade. So we did a little sleuthing and discovered that add-on units do exist. There seem to be quite a few options that use our existing electrical wiring to transmit audio. We haven't tried it yet. Anyone out there recommend these add-on units or do you have a better solution?
I have never heard a wireless speaker system that did not suffer from interference, dropouts, or distortion.
Spend your money on ribbon wire and skim coat it onto your walls. Some is so thin you can just stick it and paint it.
I first enjoyed having wireless speakers in my apartment, not having to worry about stringing wire under carpet or whatever. After buying a house, we still use our wireless speakers all the time whenever we want to bring the music somewhere different: outside our front door, the back deck, etc. It's handy, haven't had much interference, dropouts or distortion in 10+ years from inexpensive RCA speakers from Radio Shack.
i suggest you just get an airport express from www.apple.com, and plug your wired (and powered) speakers into it. there's not a good selection of high quality wireless speakers ATM.
The AR system only has the rears wireless.
The big issue with home theater and wireless is that surround sound depends on milliseconds of delay to be coordinated between the speakers. The AR system has to use highly tuned QoS (quality of service) over wireless just to get the rears to match let alone the rest of the system.
I vote with Max and suggest getting high quality ribbon cables. If you want to spread your system out among rooms without premise wiring, I suggest something like the Sonnet systems or Windows Media Center Extenders, etc. and a wireless network.
Kef wireless looks promising (click on my name). I'm surprised Sonos hasn't adapted its system yet for wireless surrounds, since this is the obvious next step for the company. There was another company at CES, but the speakers and electronis cost $5000+.
Ribbon wire? Where is an example of this? Who sells this?
