Dear AT Home Tech,

In my bedroom, I want to mount an LCD TV 16ft across the room from my bed. I am concerned about cranking up the volume in order to properly hear the audio as it might be too loud and travel throughout the house. Other than the obvious headphones, what small, yet wireless speaker system can you recommend that i may put bedside? I have noticed the Parrot wireless Hi-Fi and wondered if that would work. Good design is a secondary consideration as i live in a modern home.
Thanks!
David F

Hi David,

We want wireless speakers too, but unfortunately they pose many problems. The Parrot ones you mention look promising, but unfortunately they use Bluetooth technology. This poses two problems in our opinion. We don't think the range is sufficient for your size bedroom (we could be wrong), and we highly doubt your television has Bluetooth capabilities.

You probably need to look into something radio-based like these RCA speakers or these from Sony.

Readers, can you help David out?

Thanks kandyjaxx for your photo!

i think you might be best off with headphones if you're concerned about the noise going everywhere. I believe there are many receivers out there that have a "night time" option (or whatever it's called) that basically quiet the loud noises will keeping the vocals audible. that's not a high end feature btw... should be fairly common. I don't know how well it works though and of course that's more expensive than other options you might consider.

the only wireless option that I heard was "moderately acceptable" was the Rocketfish. I think it's like 50 bucks.

I just wrote a pretty extensive story about wireless options for the November issue of Traditional Home. Or at least I tried to, but the wireless options are pretty poor to nonexistent at the moment. As one custom installer told me, "if there was a good wireless option out there, everyone else would just go home."
I have the Sony wireless speaker (above) and it gets lots of interference and the sound quality is poor and unreliable. Sad to say, but the best bet is headphones.

Wireless audio works on frequencies, ones that are incredibly crowded with signals from all the other things in your home (or driving by in the street outside). Hence all the interference.....

We have a set of RCA wireless speakers (not the ones linked), and they're ok, but not great. Since our Bose and an excellent clock radio cover our entire apartment, we rarely use the RCA speakers. They might be fine for TV watching, but we mostly would use them for music listning, and the sound quality just is not anywhere near as good as the other two - I think I remember that there was a low buzz that you heard whenever the volume dropped. But again, they might be good enough for TV watching, which would mostly be voices, not music. They were a gift, but I think they were somewhere in the $100 range? Not sure on that...

yesterday i saw a product called the "miPillow" that has a wireless speaker built into a pillow for this very thing and thought of this thread. i found it online for sale at http://tinyurl.com/2vdbu7 . . . although the reviews don't look very promising.
