In Need of a Good Handheld Vacuum Cleaner...
Good Questions

100909_dirt_devil_kone.jpgThis one comes from a local reader in Bloomington, IN:

Q - Okay, so I've got this terrible spider problem since my home's located in a more remote, forest-rich area of the city. I've been going around with my Eureka tubes cleaning up the spider web every few days. It would be nice to have a hand vacuum cleaner (preferably wireless, if that even exists) I can use to simply pick up, clean up, and put away really easily. Any ideas?

A - Well, like we've stated before, we don't like hurting them critters, but there's no doubt a difference between a few pets and an infestation.

If yours happens to the one of the latter, we encourage calling an exterminator if it's really bad, but if you enjoy doing some easy house cleaning, take a gander at some of our recommendations below:

100909_dirt_devil_kone2.jpgDirt Devil Kone Cordless Rechargeable Hand Vac ($44): Great reviews, perfect for small clean-ups. And because it's wireless and rechargeable, you'll never have to deal with cord fiddling ever again.

100909_dustbuster.jpgBlack & Decker 15.6 -Volt Cyclonic-Action Cordless DustBuster with AccuREACH ($49): This Black and Decker model has been around forever and has always been positively received by many looking for a durable, cordless sucking machine.

I'd highly recommend the Dyson hand vac. I love mine. It was a little expensive (I paid $139 for mine on sale) but it was the best purchase I've made in cleaning products. It gets constant use and is cordless. I got the model with the powered brush attachment for getting pet fur off of furniture but there is a lower priced model without that. I'm not sure how it will work with bugs if they move really fast. I had issues with miller moths this summer and tried to catch a few but it takes a second for the vacuum to power up once you hit the power button and that would always scare the moths before I could get them.

I have recently purchased the Electrolux stick vac and LOVE it. It is cordless and has a charging base. It is awesome on hardwood, tile, and linoleum.

I had the Cone and it works really well for a $40 hand vacuum. I eventually replaced it with a Dyson DC 16 Root 6 from ecost.com for a nicely discounted $60 (retail $150ish). They are both on par with each other for picking up dirt, though I think the Cone had a better battery life. For bugs, the Cone wins out too as suction comes fast, whereas the Dyson takes a few seconds to spool up. If you're easily swayed by charming British people hocking wares, like I am, get the Dyson, otherwise, get 3 Cones for the retail price of other.

I completely agree about the Dyson. I got mine on Woot for about $60 as a refurb. It works SO well, and all of the filters can be washed when they get too clogged with...say...drywall dust. Also, no bags to replace. Once you go Dyson you don't go back.
