Carbon Hero

Should I take the bus? Or have I been good enough to the earth that I can splurge on the car this morning?

Carbon Hero, the brainchild of design student Andreas Zachariah, serves as your personal carbon calculator. Small enough to serve as your keychain, it monitors your transportation habits and calculates your personal impact on the environment. Download the data to your PC or cell phone (as shown), and get a glimpse into your personal transit habits.

We might use this to see when we've been a bit too indulgent with the car on the weekends, and those with grueling commutes could make more educated decisions about how they get around town.

If one is so concerned about environmental impact, perhaps one should consider not spending money on another gadget. I mean, honestly, what is the environmental impact of producing this ridiculous piece of gadgetry? Another example of a company selling a "green" product because it's hip. Consuming more gadgets will not save the environment!

I dunno, I think this is extraneous and green-washed ... don't you think a calculator and a sheet of paper would work just as well?

Why on earth would anyone drive if it wasn't positively necessary for timing, errands, or avoiding a long trek from the bus stop in one's fussiest business attire?

I never drove in San Francisco if it was remotely practical to take the bus. (We owned a car largely because I taught in East Bay, South Bay, and Sacramento at locations where the mass transit stopped running after my evening classes ended, and those all filled too many days for City Car Share or rentals to be more cost-effective than a paid-off personal vehicle.) Parking was an appalling hassle that made even MUNI look pleasant by contrast.

Here in the Valley of the Blazing, Merciless Sun, driving is largely necessary -- our workplaces are too far apart for both of us to have a reasonable bus trip, so I drive -- but I'm looking forward to the light rail line being completed, so that I no longer have to sit in traffic for some of my more annoyingly far-flung errands.
