Green Idea: Wind Up Remote Control

2008_08_13 wind up remote.jpgWe have two universal remote controls. Both are Logitech Harmony remotes but one uses replaceable batteries while the other one has it's own charging dock and a rechargeable battery. What we have come to realize is that it is never convenient for remote control batteries to die on you....especially if you are using rechargeable AAA batteries and don't have an extra set kicking around for when you do need to charge them. So why not get rid of batteries altogether?

Enter the wind up remote. Thirty turns of the dial give you enough juice for a full week of couch potatoing, not to mention the positive environmental impact of eliminating the need to dispose of used batteries and the convenience of never having your control go out of commission while the batteries charge. At only $39, this thing will pay for itself pretty quick.

I think it's a great idea, but I don't know about it paying for itself. Most of my remotes require a battery change maybe once or twice a year at $1-2 worth of batteries at most.
