Green Ideas The Energy Detective: Another Great Way to Reduce Your Power Bill

102408_rg_TED.jpgTimes are tough and people are cutting down everywhere. Why not try and cut down on one of the expenses that you'll pay almost every month of every year? That's the kind of thinking that brought TED together. TED is an acronym for The Energy Detective.

The best way to save money on your energy bills is information. TED monitors your home energy usage and displays it on a central monitor. The really nifty thing is that it tells you how much exactly you are saving and the costs per hour, per day and per month. It can also project how much you are spending. The makers say that this gizmo will save you between 10-20% in electricity bills each month. TED can also connect to your computer for even more data analysis. It's also an easy way to find out if you are just using too much power when you aren't around. Lights are sometimes on, heating is higher than it should be and appliances can easily be left on without anyone remembering to shut them off. TED takes care of that. A quick glance and you'll know what's up. TED is very sensitive. All it takes is 10W of power usage for TED to notice.

Unlike a few other systems, it doesn't have any remote operating possibility, meaning that if you notice that something is on from work, you can't switch it off. Actually, with TED you can't even check from a distance. One of the ways you could do this for heating is using Ecobee thermostats. However due to its low cost and serious impact on your utilities bill, TED sounds like a winner.

Within a few months, you'll be saving a lot of money and reducing your carbon footprint. Now that sounds pretty good. TED is available for purchase online through the TED website.

Why not tell us the price? Point of this post=getting readers to spend 10 minutes clicking through the TED website to find the price ($180-200 for the system)= $$$ for AT

These things aren't so great. I should know. I have one. The display really leaves something to be desired, and everything on the meter is stored in volatile RAM, so if you unplug it you have to start all over with data, unless you always have plugged into your computer where you can back it up.

kbpelham has a good point. For the price of this system you could do much more effective things to save power and money like buy fluorescent or led bulbs, or blankets... heck, I insulated the crawl of my house for $300!

This is great! Now my husband doesn't have to stand outside looking at the meter spinning to see our electricity usage. The neighbors were beginning to wonder....I am ordering it right away!
