Mercedes and Google Maps

If the built in satellite navigation of your Mercedes SL500 is not reliable enough for you, Google and Yahoo! have an answer. A 'send to car' option from Google or Yahoo maps.

After sending the maps from your PC to your car, all the driver has to do is hit a button in the car to download the maps onto the car computer, making it available to read on screen. In addition to this, friends and family are also able to send maps to the car from their PC's rather than trying to describe directions over the phone. So which is safer, talking on the phone while driving or trying to read an electronic map displayed on screen while driving? At least you don't have to waste paper printing out directions every time you go somewhere new.

this service is only available with the new generation s, cl and c-class models. these cars use a hard drive for their navigation systems, unlike the dvd-based systems in the older benz designs.

i've driven the new 2008 c-class, and had a chance to play around with the optional navigation system with voice control. i was impressed . . . it felt very natural speaking to the system. you can enter a destination and all other information without taking your hand off the wheel. so with that, what's the point of this new service, when it is easy to input stuff into the navigation system itself? unless google maps is much more comprehensive than the navigation system itself . . .

about the c-class: m-b's recent quality issues are widely known, and it's clear that they are quite aware of them too. the new c-class feels like a benz should feel - solid and functional, and nothing overtly luxurious (which in my mind is not a bad thing). i hate when people say this is a "poor man's benz" when it is all the car most people will ever need.

i don't work for m-b . . .
