Solar and Wind Photovoltaic ‘Leaves’

unplggd_030508-shing1.jpgThe GROW hybrid energy system is a naturally inspired mechanism of flexible, leaf-like solar panels that harness both solar and wind energy. Check out how the "leaves" shimmer...quite beautiful and mesmerizing.

unplggd_030508-shing.jpgAll iterations of GROW will incorporate an intuitive energy monitoring system allowing both SMIT and end-users to have a one-to-one relationship with their energy output, while enabling the ability to track and fine-tune the performance of GROW's wind and solar energy production.

GROW's unique design incorporates a proprietary, patent-pending combination of photovoltaic and piezoelectric technologies in one system that can adapt to different building typologies, programmatic demands, and regional climates.

The developer, SMIT, is looking to provide a residential version consisting of 4' x 8' panels that will use standard grid-tie hardware, allowing for easy integration with standard electrical service. Inhabitat.com reports that these modular systems will "be readily available in stores such as the MoMA store or Design Within Reach in the coming 1-2 years". We'd love to put one these up to power at least a portion of our electrical use...

Wow! That is a great idea. I know just where we would put them too, if our neighbors wouldn't hit the house anymore that is.

I like the shimmer!

Available at MOMA and DWR? Most likely going to be super cost prohibitive then. What a bummer.
