Creative Re-use: Toothpicks Turned Lampshade

052209 toothpick lamp.jpgFor whatever reason, it seems that recycled objects seem to make their way into some sort of lampshade. Case in point, cassette tapes, spray cans, and even chiquita bananas.(Not the actual bananas, but the cartons.) So what's next in line in the recycled material lampshade department? Toothpicks.

052209 toothpick lamp2.jpgExhibited at NY design week, designer Daisuke Hiraiwa uses glue and hundreds of toothpicks to mold fluid organic shapes that make for some of the more interesting light fixtures we have seen. Looks almost like a sea urchin hanging from the ceiling.

Unless these toothpicks have actually been used by someone (ewww!), I'm not sure they would qualify as recycled material...
