Ikea Hack: Zen Laptop Table

050109_rg_ikea_zen_laptop_table_01.jpgIf you are like most people, you're working more and more off your laptop. This liberates you from your desk, and makes you find different places to work. The trouble is that you need a nice flat surface usually to work on. Siew Lian came up with this idea when she started working on her laptop more and more. She ended up using an Ikea shoe rack to make this zen laptop table. Now that's cool!

050109_rg_ikea_zen_laptop_table_02.jpgThis Ikea hack comes courtesy of Siew Lian and the Babord shoe rack. It's perfect for sitting cross-legged while enjoying the afternoon on your laptop. Her husband began working at home and she lost the use of her desk and PC. That's why she was forced to use her laptop for longer periods. Instead of buying another desk, she rummaged around and found a couple of Babord shoe racks.

She used one of the rack's two shelves for the laptop tray itself, and another one to make the legs. She sawed both ends off the shelf to make the legs. With a bit of glue and nails, and reusing the bits she sawed off, she assembled the pieces. She recommends not to attach the legs square to the tray because it will tend to collapse on its side. The whole thing is really easy to make and the end result is really nice. It's an excellent way of creating an extra laptop table. Expect to spend between $15 and $30 to make this table, depending on if you already have a few shoe racks at home.[via Ikea Hacker, photos by Siew Lian]

To use this table while cross-legged with your arms extended would be pretty back-breaking to say the least, unless you had something to lean against. Definitely not an ergonomic situation, but nevertheless a great idea.
