apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

An Update on an Already Cord Controlled Desk

111808_sz_randbdesk.jpg Back in February we took a look at Flickr user Blupic's hidden wire desk. He's since updated his table, after moving into a larger apartment this Spring. He bumped up table size from a 60x38 Andover table to the 80x40 Portica table with a white oak top, both from Room and Board. The lamps are Tolomeo Micro Lamps from Artemides and come with one of three table mountings: a table base, a clamp or an in-set pivot. Blupic chose the in-set pivot, which he installed in his table. Now he's got an even cleaner desk than before -- we didn't think that was possible.

Two more photos after the jump...

Where's the underside pic this time? You know that's what us unpluggd'ers are looking for!

Yeah, it's nice that the top looks so uncluttered and wire free, but if there is a large tangle underneath...

I just don't understand the point of showing a picture of a desk with good wire management, but then not showing or telling how they accomplished it.

Macs and Tolomeos are a great match!

I have looked long and hard and never able to find the desk with wire storage I wanted, so I finally built this with some IKEA clearance white laminated top which I think it's either a table top or closet door. I paid $15 for the top. I didn't want to hide the wires and plugs on the underside or back because I want easy access and prevent our 15-month old son from playing with plugs under the table.

The wire hiding part is made of poplar stocks from Home Depot. Total cost for the real wood portion is only $30. I bought some aluminum IKEA legs for $60.

Current table looks like this....

I will finish it by trimming the sides with poplar as well.

Not sure what stain I will use if at all.
