Using Floating Shelves and Hidden Cables Effectively

082409_rg_cablefloat_01.jpgIn an effort to remain uncluttered and to keep a spartan working space, there are a few ways to keep things clean and tidy. Above all, we like it when wires aren't apparent. It's natural to have a bunch of them, especially in your home office or work area, but it's really neat when they can easily be hidden away.

082409_rg_cablefloat_02.jpgWe really like MsWeston's room layout. Instead of using one of those big corner desk affairs, he uses a simpler, tighter, and slimmer solution. Two simple desks set against each other in a corner. This optimizes desk space, letting you keep an area for your computer/laptop and another for writing, reading, and working with books.

082409_rg_cablefloat_03.jpgMsWeston used IKEA products to assemble his workspace. He managed to do so quite tidily. He uses this space to do all of his work, from emails to editing. The floating shelves are setup up in a uneven fashion so that they don't loom over his workspace. This is something that happens a lot and isn't always brilliant, as it cuts down on the available light, especially if the shelves are wide. MsWeston placed them in an optimized way so that he could use them to place his odds and ends effectively. That bottom part also holds his phone charger. All of his wires are neatly managed with plastic raceways, cable guides and tie wraps. All in all, it looks like a great setup to emulate. Naturally, you might want to change the position of the floating shelves, but the idea is sound. This setup also gives you room to grow. However, since he only has a laptop and some speakers, cable management is minimal. You can apply the same principles if you have more peripherals, as well as desktop computers.

I love how the way the shelves were used. Very creative.
