Louis & Dominika's Bookwormish Home Office
Tech Tour

Name: Louis and Dominika Marsand
Location: Québec, Canada
Size: 14' by 10'
Type: Home office

When we saw Louis' work place, we just had to find out more about it. The asymmetrical book shelves, the bookish style charmed us and we needed to know more about this beautiful room that was lovingly hand-crafted. Louis used simple wood, tools and his hands to shape this home office accordingly. It simply looks amazing.

020810_rg_LouisDominika_02.jpgWhat's most amazing about this room is that most of the furniture was created by Louis himself. That's simply amazing, it's kind of more of a DIY-room than anything else. The shelves and desk all match because Louis made them himself.

020810_rg_LouisDominika_16.jpgHe drew inspiration for the way that his room is organized from Habitat 67, the housing complex that was built by Moshe Safdie for Expo 67. A bunch of complex blocks are arranged in a half hazard manner, looking somewhat chaotic, but beautiful at the same time. Louis used this well for his home office. It was particularly useful when he created his shelving system, which just goes all over the place, in an organic and efficient manner.

020810_rg_LouisDominika_03.jpgIt's a beautiful room, that was well put together. Here are all of the details.

Unplggd Tech Tour Survey:

My style: Bookworm.

Inspiration: Habitat 67.

Favorite Element: Combination of books and computer gear.

Biggest Challenge: Mounting it on the wall.

What Friends Say: "Wow, impressive", "Want to make one for me too?"

Area where there is room for improvement/future projects: More shelves (under way!)

Proudest DIY project: The workspace.

Biggest indulgence with respect to my space: The thing I tolerate but am not proud of? Number of screws in the walls

Best advice about organizing or incorporating tech into the home: Good, detailed planning is essential and better than just adapting to circumstances while building (which will happen anyway).

Dream source for stuff: A carpenter's warehouse.

Home Tech Resources:
DIY desk, shelves and kneeling chair, which used the following materials from local companies from Quebec, Canada:

  • Boulanger pine wood: unique for planks that are precisely the size they are advertising, so you don't have to worry if the wood bits will fit together
  • water-based wood stain from La Maison Saman (eco-friendly), color no. 117
  • water-based varnish from La Maison Saman (eco-friendly)
  • Lighting: Small clip-on IKEA reading lamp
  • Two large industrial brackets (white, metal, weight capacity 1000 lb) and 4 small brackets (w.c. 300 lb)
  • Books, calendar, ashtray

Tech Hardware

  • Computer

  • The screen is fixed to a wall mount arm (no brand - ordered on e-Bay for $9.99)

Some of these are begging for an Unhappy Hipsters-style caption, like the second: "He had eaten everything else, even the tech. How would he cook the cat?" Otherwise, cool custom solution.
